Raikkonen edges Alonso for pole in Spain

Sat 26th, April 2008

Barcelona, Spain (Sports Network) - Breaking the hearts of the Spanish fans, Kimi Raikkonen grabbed the pole from crowd favorite Fernando Alonso to capture the pole for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix Formula One race at the Circuit de Catalunya. The No.1 Ferrari driver circled the 2.892-mile, 16-turn road course in one minute, 21.813 seconds.

The pole victory was Raikkonen's first of the season and 15th of his Formula One career.

Starting alongside Raikkonen will be the Spaniard, Alonso, who posted a second-best lap of 1:21.904.

Felipe Massa (1:22.058) and Robert Kubica (1:22.065) will make up row two.

Raikkonen was fastest in the first of three sessions that saw the elimination of six drivers, including David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella. Raikkonen's teammate Massa won the second session. Then in the final session Alonso brought the crowd to its feet by taking the provisional pole late in the 10-minute run only to see him knocked off the pole in the final seconds by the Finn.

It's been three weeks since the Formula One Series took to the track and when we last left them it was beginning to look like Ferrari was ready to "take over."

Ferrari's Massa was way too strong for anyone in Bahrain and his teammate Raikkonen won in Malaysia before that.

For Massa it was a huge race with rumors floating around that the team might already be looking for a new driver (Alonso?) after his failure to finish either of the first two events. But Massa responded with a great race.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton won the season opener in Australia, but has been less than spectacular since. His teammate, Heikki Kovalainen has three top-five finished and has been one of the big surprises this season along with BMW's performances.

BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld and Kubica have been solid over the first three events, posting five points-scoring results and helping their team lead the manufacturer's championship by one point.

The race is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 8 a.m. (et).
