Indy 500 schedule in May trimmed by one week

Tue 15th, December 2009

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - As a cost-cutting measure, the Indianapolis 500 will have one fewer week of track activity in May, starting in 2010.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials announced Tuesday that Pole Day Qualifying for the Indy 500 will occur on May 22, which is one week later than normally scheduled. The 33-car field will be determined in the final qualifying session -- known as Bump Day -- on May 23.

The Speedway will open May 15 for rookie practice, while practice for all IndyCar teams takes place May 17-21.

Next year's Indy 500 is scheduled for May 30.

Several teams had requested that the Indy Racing League reduce its schedule for the 500-mile race to help reduce costs. The Indy 500 last followed a two- week format from 1998-2000.
