IZOD IndyCar Series - Camping World Grand Prix at the Glen Preview

NOTES: Justin Wilson won for the second time in his career, as he raced to victory last year, defeating pole sitter Ryan Briscoe by almost five seconds. Wilson, who captured the Detroit Indy Grand Prix in 2008, put on a dominating performance, leading 49 of the 60 laps. Winning this race does not bode well for a driver to capture the season-ending championship. In five previous races, the winner at Watkins Glen has never captured the IndyCar Series championship. The points leader after this race however, has gone on to win the championship three times: Scott Dixon (2008), Dario Franchitti (2007) and Dan Wheldon (2005). In 2008, Briscoe dominated the early portion of the race, leading 37 of the first 41 laps, but it was Ryan Hunter-Reay who took the lead with nine laps remaining and held on for the victory. Hunter-Reay defeated Darren Manning by 2.4009 seconds for his first IndyCar title. Briscoe, who started on the pole, faded and finished 12th. Scott Dixon completed the three-peat in 2007, as he cruised to a 6.2591 seconds win over Sam Hornish Jr, to capture the checkered flag for the third consecutive year at The Glen. Three-time pole sitter Helio Castroneves led for the first 19 laps, but was forced out due to contact on Turn 11. Dixon inherited the lead and then traded the top spot with Vitor Meira, Dan Wheldon and Marco Andretti, before regaining the advantage on lap 43. Dixon led the final 18 laps for his seventh career IndyCar win and first of four 2007 titles.. Dixon's 2.3311 seconds win over Vitor Meira in 2006 is the smallest margin of victory in race history at The Glen. Dixon claimed the lead for the first time on lap 47 of the then 55-lap race and held on for the win. The inaugural IndyCar race at Watkins Glen took place in 2005, as Dixon led the final 13 laps for victory, his only win that year. Castroneves led the first 21 laps, but failed to finish due to an accident in the Inner Loop on the final lap. TRACK FACTS: 3.4-mile Grand Prix course with 11 turns, featuring a variety of banking in turns, ranging from 6 to 10 degrees. The length of the frontstretch is 2,150 feet while the backstretch is 2,600 feet. 2008 marked the 60th Anniversary of the first race held in the streets of Watkins Glen. Capital improvements were completed during that year and included a new, state-of-the- art Media Center and the addition of two pit boxes to bring the total on pit road to 43. The Honda Indy Toronto on the Streets of Toronto on July 18th is the next Izod IndyCar Series event. Dario Franchitti won last year's race there. 06/29 18:02:26 ET
