IZOD IndyCar Series - Iowa Corn Indy 250 Preview

NOTES: Dario Franchitti has raced at Iowa Speedway twice and has come away a winner on both occasions, as he enters the 2010 version of the Iowa Corn Indy 250 as the defending champion. Last year, Franchitti easily held off Ryan Briscoe at the finish for his 10th career IndyCar win. After winning the Indianapolis 500 last month and then finishing fifth at Texas earlier this month, the defending IndyCar champion has claimed the points lead. Briscoe dominated the middle portion of last year's race at Iowa, leading from lap 138 through 194. However, Franchitti took over in the late-stages, as he led the final 50 laps. Helio Castroneves started on the pole and led the first 16 laps, but faded to a seventh place finish. Briscoe, who led the most laps with 85, finished in the runner-up position for the third consecutive race. In 2008, Castroneves and Tony Kanaan battled for most of the race, but in the end, it was Dan Wheldon who took the checkered flag at Iowa. Castroneves and Kanaan traded the lead through the opening 134 laps, before Marco Andretti took over for the next 26 circuits. Kanaan gained the advantage on lap 161, only to be overtaken by Castroneves six laps later. With 61 laps remaining, Wheldon moved into the lead, and then held it for the rest of the way. He edged Hideki Mutoh by 0.1430 seconds for his 15th and most recent IndyCar win. When IndyCar competed at Iowa for the first time in 2007, Franchitti avoided numerous crashes and held off Marco Andretti at the finish to win the Iowa Corn Indy 250. Seven drivers were knocked out of the event early due to accidents. Franchitti crossed the finish line 0.0681 seconds ahead of Andretti for his second of four wins during his '07 IndyCar championship season. Iowa Speedway is the first racetrack in the nation to install the Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) barrier as the sole retaining wall surrounding the racetrack. Often called a "soft wall," the SAFER barrier uses high-density foam to absorb the impact during a crash. It has made Iowa Speedway's racing as safe as it is exciting. In addition, the track is the first-ever racing facility to have multiple Track-Cams installed prior to its surface pavement. These wide-angle lens cameras are embedded in the surface of the track itself, providing incredible perspectives for television viewers. The track is owned and operated by U.S. Motorsport Corporation and designed by former NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace. The July 4th Camping World Grand Prix at the Glen at Watkins Glen International is the next IZOD IndyCar Series event. Justin Wilson is the defending race winner. 06/15 17:23:48 ET
