IZOD IndyCar Series - Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 Preview

NOTES: Scott Dixon will attempt to join Dan Wheldon as the only back-to-back winner of this race, as he defends his title this week at the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300. Last season, Dixon outraced Helio Castroneves by less than one second for his 17th career IndyCar title. The victory was the first of five 2009 titles, as he finished second on the points list. Dixon has finished in the top-five at Kansas and series points the past four years. In 2008, Wheldon defeated Tony Kanaan by just over two seconds to repeat as champion of the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300. Starting second on the grid, Wheldon took the lead on lap 152, and held it the rest of the way, as he posted the 14th of 15 career IndyCar titles. Prior to his back-to-back wins, Wheldon posted two consecutive runner-up finishes. Wheldon dominated the race in 2007, as he led for 177 of the 200 laps en route to victory over Dario Franchitti. Wheldon, who started fourth, exchanged the lead with pole sitter Tony Kanaan over the opening laps, but assumed control on the ninth lap. Scott Dixon, who placed fourth, took over for two laps, but Wheldon once again took control on the 51st lap. Dixon again gained the advantage, but Wheldon responded on lap 105 and held the lead until Dixon again took the lead on the 156th lap. The lead was short-lived as Wheldon took over for good on the 165th lap and completed the victory under caution. With just two laps remaining, Scott Sharp created the caution flag due to contact in turn four. Kanaan never threatened again and finished 15th. Ground was broken on the new Kansas Speedway on May 25, 1999, five days before the 83rd running of the Indianapolis 500. The speedway is the largest tourist attraction in the State of Kansas with grandstand seating for 75,000 spectators. Upon completion of the final phase of construction, the track could seat the entire population of the Virgin Islands, 150,000. About 11 million cubic yards of dirt were moved during construction. That is equal to 1 million dump truck loads or enough to fill an NFL stadium five times. To equal the amount of storm pipe used in the speedway, the Sears Tower in Chicago would be laid end to end 45 times. In 2006, Sam Hornish Jr outraced Wheldon to the finish line to capture the sixth running of the race. Hornish, who finished second at this race the first two years, took the checkered flag just 0.0793 of a second ahead of Wheldon for the 17th of 19 career titles. Hornish reclaimed the lead on lap 199 of the 200-lap race. Hornish and Wheldon dominated the race, as each led on six different occasions. Hornish led for 149 laps, while pole sitter Wheldon led for 45. The IZOD IndyCar Series continues with the 94th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 30th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Helio Castroneves will defend his title. 04/27 13:25:31 ET
