Madison, IL (Sports Network) - The feud between Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski in NASCAR reached another boiling point on Saturday when Edwards spun out Keselowski coming out of the final turn of the last lap and took the win in the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 at Gateway International Raceway.
Edwards and Keselowski battled for the lead in a two-lap shootout to the finish. A multi-car crash in the closing laps set up the green-white-checkered finish. Keselowski led for the restart, but Edwards held a slim lead over him as they took the white flag for the final lap.
Keselowski bumped and shoved Edwards slightly up the track on the last lap, but Edwards came back and then bumped Keselowski from behind and sent him into the wall along the frontstretch.
Edwards claimed his second victory of the season and the 27th of his Nationwide career. He now leads all drivers with three wins at Gateway, which is roughly 125 miles east of his hometown of Columbia, MO.
"I just couldn't let him take the win away from me," Edwards said. "When we came to the checkered flag, I hate to see stuff tore up, but we came here to win."
After hitting the wall, Keselowski's car slid across the finish line before the Shelby Howard plowed into him, causing him to spin around again.
"We raced really well there earlier in the race, but he just got over his head and tried too hard, and it was at my expense," Edwards said. "So [at the end], it was at his expense, and we got the win."
Keselowski was not injured during incident. During his examination in the infield care center, his father and former NASCAR driver, Bob Keselowski, was furious with Edwards.
"I'm sick and tired of this," Bob Keselowski said during a post-race interview on ESPN. "He's not going to kill my boy. I'll put my old driver's uniform back on and take care of this myself."
Keselowski, who dominated most of the race by leading 136 laps, wound up finishing 14th. His points lead was trimmed to 168 over Edwards.
"I found a way to beat him, and he just wrecked me," Keselowski said.
Both drivers have had previous on-track altercations, particularly in March when Edwards intentionally bumped Keselowski from behind and sent him flying upside down into the frontstretch wall during the closing laps of the Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta. Several days after Atlanta, NASCAR placed Edwards on probation for three races.
The feud between the two began in April 2009 when Keselowski hit Edwards from behind on the final lap at Talladega. While Keselowski drove on to his first Sprint Cup victory, Edwards' car spun and then sailed into the safety fence along the frontstretch.
The 200-lap race at Gateway ran incident free until a rash of accidents occurred during the final 50 laps. Justin Allgaier triggered a multi-car crash after he made contact with pole sitter Trevor Bayne and cut a tire. Allgaier spun around and collected Tayler Malsam and Joe Nemechek. NASCAR halted the race for four minutes. The incident setup the two-lap sprint to the finish.
Reed Sorenson finished second, and Bayne came in third. Paul Menard and Steve Wallace rounded out the top-five.
Kevin Harvick, who won the Camping World Truck Series race at Gateway earlier in the day, finished 16th in the Nationwide event. Harvick blew a right-front tire and made contact with the wall in the late-stages.
