McMurray holds off Busch for Atlanta Nationwide win

Sat 4th, September 2010

Hampton, GA (Sports Network) - Jamie McMurray won his first Nationwide Series race in nearly six years by taking Saturday's Great Clips 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

McMurray continued his sensational season in NASCAR after winning the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis in the Sprint Cup Series earlier this year. He passed Brad Keselowski after the final restart with 23 laps remaining, and then held off a hard-charging Kyle Busch in the closing laps for his eighth career Nationwide win, but his first since November 2004 at Darlington. His first career win in the series came in 2002 at Atlanta.

"When we unloaded today, I knew I pretty much had the fastest car," McMurray said. "I was just really loose, but the team did a really good job on adjusting it."

McMurray, who drove the No.88 Chevrolet for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Nationwide team, JR Motorsports, held the lead when the fourth and final caution came after Reed Sorenson slammed hard into the wall. Busch beat McMurray out of the pits, but Keselowski gambled and stayed out on the track. McMurray charged from third to first after the restart.

Busch moved ahead of Keselowski shortly after to take the second spot. Busch chased down McMurray during the final five laps, but came up 0.29 seconds short of picking up his record 11th win in the series this season.

"I had a fast [car] tonight, and I'm real proud of the guys, and they gave me a good enough car to try and win, but I came up short," said Busch, who led the most laps with 74.

Sam Ard set the record of 10 wins during the 1983 season, but Busch matched that record in 2008. Busch claimed his 10th win of the season two weeks ago at Bristol. He did not compete at Montreal two weeks ago.

Carl Edwards finished third, followed by Kevin Harvick, who won this race last year, and Matt Kenseth.

Joey Logano, Jason Leffler, Ryan Newman, Paul Menard and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. completed the top-10.

Keselowski, who did not pit during the final round of stops, wound up finishing 12th. His lead is now 332 points over Edwards.
