NASCAR - Nationwide - Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 Preview

NOTES: Reed Sorenson returns to Gateway International Raceway as the defending race winner. In fact, Sorenson has won two of the last three races there, winning also in 2005. Dale Earnhardt Jr and Kevin Harvick are the only other drivers with repeat victories at Gateway. Last season, Sorenson ended a 61- race winless streak with the victory, as he finished 2.064 seconds ahead of Scott Simmer. The last victory for Sorenson came in 2005 when he won this race. Denny Hamlin dominated, but it was Carl Edwards who took the checkered flag in 2006, as he crossed the finish line 5.658 seconds ahead of Clint Bowyer for his ninth career Nationwide Series title. Pole sitter Hamlin led four times for a race-high 169 laps and Edwards just 26, but it was leading the final nine laps that got Edwards the win. In 2005, Reed Sorenson outdueled Mike Wallace by less than a second to capture his second career Nationwide Series win. Pole sitter Martin Truex Jr finished 26th. Sorenson reclaimed the lead on lap 168 from Truex and held on the rest of the way. Sorenson led for a total of 60 laps, while Dave Stremme led for 54 and Truex Jr 34. Five of the 11 winners at Gateway have gone on to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship in the same season. Dale Earnhardt Jr won back-to-back races at Gateway and clinched the series title consecutively from 1998 to 1999. Kevin Harvick won there and captured the championship in 2001. Greg Biffle did it in 2002, and Martin Truex Jr did so in 2004. Clint Bowyer enters this weekend's race with a 183-point advantage over Brad Keselowski. Keselowski finished third at Chicagoland but shaved only 19 points from Bowyer's lead. Bowyer finished seventh and recorded his 10th straight top-10 finish in the series. The No.2 RCR Chevrolet driver has only one victory so far this season, coming in March at Bristol, TN. His best finish at Gateway is second in 2006. Keselowski finished 26th in his first start there last year. NASCAR used unleaded fuel for the first the time when the Nationwide Series competed in the July 2006 race at Gateway. NASCAR planned to evaluate the use of unleaded fuel over several Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series events in the latter part of the 2006 season before making a decision on when it will be mandated for all three national series. The sanctioning body switched to unleaded fuel for all series at the start of the 2007 season. The NASCAR Nationwide championship moves to the O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis for the Kroger 200 on July 26th, as Jason Leffler defends his title. 07/16 13:24:40 ET
