NASCAR - Nationwide - Nicorette 300 Preview

NOTES: Jeff Burton only led twice for a total of 29 laps, but it included the final 26, as he clipped Kevin Harvick by 1.064 seconds for his 24th Nationwide Series win. Pole sitter Kyle Busch dominated this race, as he led five times for a race-high 143 laps. Busch, who has sat on the pole the last two years, placed third, his second top-3 finish in three appearances at this race. With the win, Burton joined Mark Martin as the only back-to-back winners of this race. Martin accomplished the feat in 1997-98. Burton, who owns 27 career Nationwide titles, has an average running position of 3.9 in Atlanta and could join Martin as the only three-time winners of this race. Back in 1992, Jeff Gordon won his first national series race at Atlanta in Nationwide Series competition, the inaugural year for this event. Jeff Burton crossed the finish line 1.420 seconds ahead of Kasey Kahne to win for the 21st time in his Nationwide Series career in 2006. Burton, who led on four different occasions throughout the race for 75 laps, reclaimed the lead on lap 176 and held on to take the checkered flag in front of 75,000 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Pole sitter Kyle Busch led the first 25 laps, but failed to finish due to an accident. In 2005, pole sitter Carl Edwards captured his first-ever Busch Series title, as he edged out Tony Stewart by less than two seconds. Edwards, who won the pole position earlier in the day, led the first 29 laps then fell as low as 13th before making his final move. In the previous 16 years, the pole sitter has captured this event three times and the top five spots have won six of the 16 races. The pole sitter has won two of the last five races. The farthest a driver has started and won this race was 28th, when Matt Kenseth won in 2004. The next race on the Nationwide Series schedule is on Saturday, March 15th at the Bristol Motor Speedway for the Sharpie Mini 300, as Carl Edwards defends his title. One of seven tracks to have hosted events since the series inaugural year in 1982, Bristol is the first short track on the schedule this season. 03/05 12:15:13 ET
