NASCAR - Nationwide - Pepsi 300 Preview

NOTES: Starting from the eighth position, Carl Edwards took the lead for the first time on lap 119 and then after trading the top position with Jason Leffler, regained the advantage on lap 201 and held on for a 4.673 seconds victory over David Reutimann. Edwards led three times for a race-high 74 laps, as he posted his 11th Nationwide Series win. Pole sitter David Stremme led the opening 20 laps, but faded and finished 11th. The NASCAR Nationwide Series has been competing in the Nashville area since 1984. The series first raced at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway (now known as Music City Motorplex) in 1984, '88, '89 and 1995-2000. The fairgrounds facility was a high-banked, 1/2-mile track which could trace its racing heritage back to 1907 when it opened as a 1-mile horse track. The series moved to the new 1.333-mile Nashville Superspeedway in 2001. Back in 2006, Kevin Harvick captured the Pepsi 300, as he crossed the finish line a mere 0.503 of a second ahead of Clint Bowyer for his 18th career Busch Series title. Harvick, who started seventh on the grid, captured the lead for the first time on lap 81, but was overtaken by Denny Hamlin on the 91st lap. Harvick reclaimed the advantage on lap 171 and held on through the end for his first win of 2006. Harvick led for a total of 66 laps, while pole sitter Hamlin led for a race-high 86 laps, finishing third. Harvick, the current Nationwide Series points leader, is skipping this race. Last week's winner, Clint Bowyer and Carl Edwards, second and third in the points race, trail Harvick by 49 and 50 points respectively. In 2005, Reed Sorenson cruised to a 14.471-seconds win over Kenny Wallace for his first career Nationwide Series win. Sorenson, who started on the pole, led 197 of the 225 laps. Sorenson's speed of 124.436 m.p.h. set a new race record. With his win, he became the first and only pole sitter to capture this race. The NASCAR Nationwide championship moves to the Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, April 5th for the O'Reilly 300, where Matt Kenseth captured the 2007 event. 03/18 16:00:15 ET
