NASCAR - Nationwide - Sam's Town 300 Preview

NOTES: Last year, Jeff Burton became the first three-time winner of this race, as he edged Kyle Busch by less than a second for his 23rd career Nationwide Series title. Burton and Busch battled for the lead during the final 43 laps, but Burton overtook Busch on the final lap in front of an estimated crowd of 110,000. Pole sitter Kevin Harvick finished seventh after leading for 19 laps. Busch, who started 20th on the grid, led for a race-high 81 laps, while Burton led for 37. In 2006, Kasey Kahne registered his fourth career Nationwide Series title, as he crossed the finish line 0.316 of a second ahead of pole sitter Matt Kenseth. Kahne reclaimed the lead on lap 178 of the 206-lap event and held on the rest of the way in front of an estimated crowd of 100,000. Kahne led on three separate occasions for a total of 52 laps, while Kenseth led twice for 60 laps. Third-place finisher Kevin Harvick was the lap-leader for the race with 81. Kenseth dominated the race early, as he led for the first 59 laps, however Kahne and Harvick traded for the lead throughout the remainder of the race. The inaugural Las Vegas Nationwide race in 1997 was the first Series race west of the Mississippi river. This year alone, nine of the 35 races are west of the Mississippi. When Mark Martin took the checkered flag in 2005, he edged out Kevin Harvick by less than two seconds. The win was Martin's second of that year and the 47th of his career on the Nationwide Series circuit. Martin, who led the race on three occasions, reclaimed the lead on lap 192 of the 200-lap race. Martin is the only other multiple winner of this race (1999). Kevin Harvick has one win, two seconds, a third and a seventh-place finish in the last five Las Vegas Nationwide Series races. The last driver to post the Las Vegas sweep in one weekend was Jeff Burton in 2000. Burton has three wins and six top-10 finishes in his seven trips around Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His average running position is 3.8. Always a highly contested race, the margin of victory in the last five races has been under one second four times. In 2005, Mark Martin posted a 1.412 seconds win. The Nationwide Series moves to Georgia next week for the Nicorette 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, as Jeff Burton defends his title. 02/27 14:51:07 ET
