NASCAR - Nationwide - Sharpie Mini 300 Preview

NOTES: Carl Edwards will go for the rare double at Bristol, as he defends his title at the 26th annual Sharpie Mini 300. Last season, Edwards outraced Matt Kenseth to the checkered flag to post his 10th career Nationwide Series title. Before an estimated crown of 110,000, Edwards reclaimed the lead on lap 241 and held on the rest of the way to edge Kenseth by less than half a second. Pole sitter Steve Wallace, who led the first 32 laps, finished 31st. Edwards led four times for a race-high 147 laps, while third-place finisher Kyle Busch led twice for 89. Morgan Shepherd is the only driver in Sharpie Mini 300 history to repeat as champion. Shepherd accomplished the feat in 1986-87 and is the only three-time winner of this race. Eight defending and former series champions representing seven victories are scheduled to compete this week. Defending driver champion Edwards and Scott Wimmer are joined by Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr, Greg Biffle, Joe Nemechek and Bobby Labonte. Harvick's win from the 38th starting position in the 2005 Bristol race, was the biggest come-from-the-back win since Chad Little's NASCAR Nationwide Series record 1995 Daytona win from 42nd. Ryan Newman's 2005 win at Michigan matched Harvick's feat. Both races' starting fields were set by the rulebook when time trials were cancelled due to weather. Mike Wallace aims for his 300th career start Saturday, the 12th driver to reach the milestone. Jason Keller, the series' all-time leader in starts is seeking his 29th start at Bristol which would once again break a mark held by Tommy Houston. Keller, Houston and Michael Waltrip all have 28 starts at Bristol, second to Dale Jarrett's record of 30. Keller broke the all-time series starts mark last year formerly held by Houston. Keller was the last pole sitter to win this race back in 1999. The next race on the NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule is March 22nd at the Nashville Superspeedway for the Pepsi 300, as Carl Edwards once again defends his title. 03/11 16:20:26 ET
