Hornaday wins Milwaukee, reclaims points lead on birthday

West Allis, WI (Sports Network) - Ron Hornaday Jr. celebrated his 51st birthday in style Saturday by winning the rain-delayed Copart 200 Camping World Truck Series race with a dominating performance at The Milwaukee Mile.

Hornaday led 180 of 200 laps. A late-race incident involving Chad McCumbee set up a nine-lap shootout to the finish. On the final restart, Hornaday pulled away from Dennis Setzer and then easily held him off at the finish to win his second race of the season and extend his record in the Truck Series to 41 career victories. He also won at Milwaukee for the second time, with his first coming here in 1997.

"I've been following Johnny Benson around here for a lot of laps, and I've learned a lot," Hornaday said.

Benson had won the last three truck races at Milwaukee, but his Red Horse Racing team suspended operations due to lack of sponsorship two weeks ago. The reigning series champion continues to recuperate at home after suffering a broken rib and minor burns in a fiery crash during a SuperModified race near Grand Rapids, MI last weekend.

Hornaday, who also won on this day in 1998 at Bristol, is the only driver in the series to win on his birthday.

Setzer finished in the runner-up spot for the second time this season, while Brian Scott came in third, despite driving with a broken right wrist that he sustained in an early-race accident last week at Michigan. Scott nudged Todd Bodine from behind and then moved underneath him to take the third position with less than 15 laps to go. Bodine ended up finishing fourth.

"Going through the gears was hard, and it was just hard in race situations," Scott said. "It was a good day, though. I'll take a top-three with a broken wrist any day."

James Buescher completed the top-five.

Stacy Compton was sixth, followed by Tayler Malsam, Colin Braun, David Starr and Terry Cook, who made his 300th career start in the series.

With the victory, Hornaday moved back into the points lead. He now holds a 36- point advantage over Matt Crafton, who slipped back in the field during the late-stages to finish 16th.

Hornaday, who is also competing in Saturday night's Nationwide Series race at Milwaukee, will attempt to match Kyle Busch's feat of winning two NASCAR national series events on the same day. Busch won the Nationwide and Truck Series race at California earlier this year.

The 200-mile race at Milwaukee was scheduled for Friday, but severe thunderstorms forced the postponement of it one day.
