Kyle Busch enters team ownership in NASCAR

Fri 11th, December 2009

Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch announced on Friday he will become a team owner in the Camping World Truck Series, starting with the 2010 season.

Busch, the reigning Nationwide Series champion and winner of 62 races combined in NASCAR's three national touring series, currently will field two full-time teams in the Truck Series under the Kyle Busch Motorsports banner. He will share driving duties with Brian Ickler in the No.18 Toyota next year, with Miccosukee Resort and Gaming sponsoring the teams efforts. Tayler Malsam will run a full-time schedule in the Talking Rain-sponsored No.56 truck.

"Everyone knows how much I love to race, and the Camping World Truck Series is one of my favorite places to race, so to be a team owner in this series is a perfect match," the 24-year-old Busch said. "We started KBM two years ago with the Late Model program, and this seemed like the next natural step. I'm also very pleased with our driver lineup, having young and talented guys like Tayler Malsam and Brian Ickler."

Rick Ren will serve as KBM's director of competition. Ren, a two-time championship crew chief with driver Ron Hornaday Jr., left Kevin Harvick Inc. last week to assume his new role.

"I think Kyle for a young man has a lot on his plate and a lot of opportunities," Ren said. "For me to get to work with him and his company on a day-to-day basis is a pretty good opportunity, and I'm just glad to be a part of it."

KBM's headquarters remains under construction. The team will use the former Xpress Motorsports race shop for the meantime.

Malsam, 20, drove the No.81 Toyota for Randy Moss Motorsports during his rookie season this year.

"To drive for [Busch] is just going to be awesome," Malsam said.

Ickler, 24, ran a partial schedule for Billy Ballew Motorsports, the same team Busch drove for this season. Ickler also has driven for Busch's Late Model team, as well as the ARCA Series.

"I can't thank Kyle enough," Ickler said. "He's helped my career so much."

KBM has yet to name the crew chiefs for its teams.

Busch plans to run a third entry, with 2008 series champion Johnny Benson, if sponsorship can be found.
