Peters steals truck win from Bodine at Daytona

Sat 13th, February 2010

Daytona Beach, FL (Sports Network) - Timothy Peters denied Todd Bodine a third straight Camping World Truck Series victory at Daytona International Speedway by taking Saturday's NextEra Energy Resources 250.

Bodine held the lead on the final lap, but Peters got a push from pole sitter Jason White and then tapped Bodine from behind, shoving him up the track.

Peters protected his lead and finished 0.068 seconds ahead of Bodine for his second career truck victory.

"I was just content where I was, but [Jason White] came up and gave me a good run," Peters said. "I went high and moved [Bodine] up. We all just kind of creamed up together."

After crossing the finish line second, Bodine spun on the infield grass. Bodine had won the truck season-opener at Daytona the past two years.

"You're a sitting duck when leading," Bodine said. "Timmy just did it right. He went down on the side, and I had to block, and he came back under. It was a great crossover move. He did it exactly the way you're supposed to do it. The truck was fast, and it was a race of survival tonight."

Dennis Setzer came in third, while White and Matt Crafton rounded out the top- five.

Former Formula One driver Nelson Piquet Jr. finished an impressive sixth in his first NASCAR start. Stacy Compton was seventh, followed by Johnny Benson, Donnie Neuenberger and J.J. Yeley.

Peters first truck win came last October at Martinsville.

"I can't believe it," Peters said. "This thing drove like a Lexus tonight."

The wild 250-mile race featured several major crashes, including one that took out reigning series champion Ron Hornaday Jr.

On lap 32, Hornaday and his Kevin Harvick Inc. teammate Ricky Carmichael triggered a 10-truck pileup. Carmichael bumped into the back of Hornaday, sending him into the wall.

"Ricky got to the bottom, so it slowed my truck up, and then Ricky got a good run and then ran into me," said Hornaday, who finished 27th. "The bumpers in these trucks don't line up whatsoever."

Carmichael slammed into the wall and the pileup occurred from there.

"I bumped [Hornaday] from behind," Carmichael said. "I had bumped him before, and I'm no expert at bump-drafting. I do know you've got to have patience."

Carmichael finished 29th. Elliott Sadler, driving a third KHI entry, also was involved in the wreck, but returned to track 15 laps later for a 20th-place run.

The fireworks began on the opening lap when Austin Dillon created a pileup of nine trucks heading into turn three. Dillon, the grandson of NASCAR team owner Richard Childress, got loose and made contact with Aric Almirola. He sent Johnny Sauter into the wall.

"I don't really know if I made a mistake, but I tried my best to save it," said Dillon, who drives the No.3, the same number Dale Earnhardt had on his Cup car when he drove for Childress.

Kyle Busch, making his debut as driver and owner in the series, and 2005 truck champion Ted Musgrave were among those involved in the incident. Busch spent 17 laps behind the wall for repairs, but returned for a 22nd-place finish. Musgrave wound up 31st.

The truck race was scheduled for Friday, but heavy rain at Daytona forced postponement to shortly after Saturday's Nationwide Series race.

Several accidents also occurred in the Nationwide event, including ones that involved Danica Patrick, who made her series debut, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Tony Stewart won the 300-mile race at Daytona for the third year in a row.
