NASCAR - Sprint Cup - LifeLock.com 400 Preview

NOTES: Starting from the 19th position, Tony Stewart slowly moved into contention and then grabbed the lead for the first time on lap 110. After trading the top spot with several drivers, Stewart regained the advantage for the sixth and final time on lap 232 and held on the rest of the way to edge Matt Kenseth for his 30th career Sprint Cup title. Stewart, who now totals 32 career wins, led for a race-high 108 laps. Pole sitter Casey Mears led the first five laps, and finished fifth. Stewart's margin of victory was 1.727 seconds. With half of the Sprint Cup season complete, here is a mid-season synopsis. 10 of the 18 races have produced different winners. There have been 11 different pole winners. 46 drivers have led at least one lap and 74 different drivers have attempted to qualify for at least one race. All four manufacturers have won at least three races, with Toyota leading the way with seven wins. Chevrolet, Stewart and Kevin Harvick have dominated at Chicagoland. Chevy has won this race six of the seven years, while Stewart and Harvick are the only multiple champions of this race. Another little tidbit, Stewart, 12th in the standings, is just two points ahead of Harvick in the race for the coveted top-12 spot. Harvick has an average finish at Chicagoland of 8.0 with four top-five's. Stewart has recorded five top-5s with an average placing of 11.0. In 2006, Jeff Gordon knocked Matt Kenseth out of the way late in the race and captured the USG Sheetrock 400 at the Chicagoland Speedway. The No.24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet crossed the finish line 0.461 of a second ahead of Jeff Burton. The victory was Gordon's second of the 2006 season and 75th of his Sprint Cup career, moving him just one win shy of Dale Earnhardt's career total. Gordon, who now stands sixth on the all-time list with 79 victories, reclaimed the lead with only seven laps remaining to clip pole sitter Burton. Matt Kenseth dominated the race leading four times for a total of 112 laps, however he faded down the stretch and placed 22nd. Dale Earnhardt Jr defeated Kenseth in 2005 by less than a second for his 16th career Sprint Cup title and the first of that season. Kenseth dominated the race, leading a whopping 176 laps, but it was Earnhardt Jr who took the lead on lap 257 and held on the rest of the way for the win. Jimmie Johnson, who started on the pole, finished third. Earnhardt Jr started from the 25th position. The furthest a driver has come from to capture the race was 32nd in 2002 by Kevin Harvick. Harvick is the lone multiple champion of this race, having won back-to-back titles in 2001-02. The pole sitter has never captured this race, however, 1st on the grid has finished in the top five, six times. The construction of Chicagoland Speedway began in August of 1999, with the first race, a Nationwide event being staged July 14, 2001. The following day, the Sprint Cup Series debuted at the track. 17 drivers have competed in all seven races at Chicago. The best starting position of a race winner at Chicago was sixth by Kevin Harvick in the inaugural race . Since that time only one race has been won from a top-10 starting position with two coming from outside the top-25. Following last year's race, lights have been installed at Chicagoland, as this season's race will be at night. The next race in the Sprint Cup championship is scheduled for July 27th at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Allstate 400 at The Brickyard, as Tony Stewart defends his title. 07/08 18:30:21 ET
