NASCAR - Sprint Cup - All-Star Race Preview

NOTES: This event is called the All-Star game of NASCAR. The Sprint All-Star Challenge's format consists of four segments and features teams that qualify for the event by winning a Sprint Cup Series event during the 2009 or 2010 seasons. Additionally, two drivers will qualify for the premier event by finishing first and second, respectively, in the Sprint Showdown. Additionally, the winner of the Sprint All-Star Fan Vote is eligible, and drivers won have won the All-Star race the past 10 seasons. The 26th running of this event will feature a 10-lap shootout as its final segment. The opening segment is 50 laps with a mandatory green-flag pit on lap 25. Segments 2 and 3 will be 20 laps each with a 10-minute break prior to the final segment. Starting 15th on the grid, Tony Stewart raced to victory last year, as he defeated Matt Kenseth by less than a second for his first win in the event. Stewart overtook Kenseth with just two laps remaining to snatch the victory. Kasey Kahne can thank the fans for giving him the opportunity to win the 2008 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, as he made it into the field after being voted in by the fans. Starting 24th on the grid, Kahne took the lead with 17 laps remaining and raced to victory, defeating Greg Biffle by 1.327 seconds. Kahne became the first driver to start outside the top-20 and win the race. In 2007, Kevin Harvick outdueled Jimmie Johnson down the stretch and won by less than a second, reversing the result from the previous season. In 2006, Johnson defeated Harvick by 1.729 seconds. Pole sitter Matt Kenseth dominated the first segment and led 36 of the 80 laps, but a speeding penalty on pit road was his demise, as he finished seventh. Harvick took over the race on lap 61 and held on through the checkered flag. Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt are the only three-time winners of this race. The winner of this event has won the next race, the Coca-Cola 600, four times (Darrell Waltrip in 1985, Davey Allison in 1991, Earnhardt in 1993, Kasey Kahne 2008). Allison is the only driver to win this race two consecutive years. The All-Star Race, a non-points event, features winners on the Sprint Cup circuit and past race champions. The All-Star Race field, by rule, consists of a minimum of 20 drivers who have either won races or championships in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, or an All-Star race, within the past 10 years. Time trials will be three laps, including a four-tire pit stop. Total elapsed time of the three-lap qualifying run will determine starting positions for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. The pit road speed limit will be in effect when cars enter pit road but will not be in effect when cars exit. When Dale Earnhardt Jr won in 2000, he became the first driver since the inaugural race to win on his initial try. Ryan Newman has since added his name to this category when he won in 2002. Bill Elliott is the all-time leader with five poles and 13 top-10 finishes. Terry Labonte has raced in this event 20 times, as has Mark Martin, while Rusty Wallace drove in 19 consecutive All-Star events. Jeff Gordon is the youngest winner of the NASCAR Sprint Cup All-Star Race at 23 years, 9 months and 16 days (1995). Martin is the oldest at 46 years, 4 months and 12 days (2005). Throughout the various renditions of The All-Star Race, one thing has remained constant - The All-Star event is the richest race per mile on the NASCAR Sprint Cup calendar. The pole sitter has won this race only three times, the last coming in 1992 when Davey Allison recorded the feat for the second straight year. Dale Earnhardt was the first driver to win from the pole in 1990. Two-time winner Jimmie Johnson has a 6.00 average finish in eight appearances in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, the best of any driver with more than two appearances. In fact, in six of the eight races, Johnson has placed in the top-five. A close second is Matt Kenseth, who has an average finish of 6.4 in nine races with six top-10s. Five drivers have won the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship in the same year: Darrell Waltrip (1985), Dale Earnhardt (1987, 1990, 1993), Rusty Wallace (1989), Jeff Gordon (1995, 1997, 2001), Jimmie Johnson (2006). Brad Keselowski is the only driver in the field who is making his first appearance in the All-Star race. Kahne is the only driver to win the All-Star race after being voted in by the fans. The next Sprint Cup Series race is the May 30th Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, as David Reutimann defends his title. 05/21 12:49:13 ET
