NASCAR - Sprint Cup - Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 Preview

NOTES: Denny Hamlin's 50-race winless streak was bittersweet last year. Hamlin, who recorded his fifth career Sprint Cup title, had lost his 91-year-old grandmother just three days prior. Hamlin, who put on a dominating performance with 91 laps led, passed Clint Bowyer with 10 laps remaining. He then held off Juan Pablo Montoya by 0.869 of a second for his first victory since March 2008 at Martinsville. Currently third on the points list, Hamlin is a five-time winner this year and now boasts 13 career Sprint titles, including his back-to-back triumphs (Pocono and Michigan) the first two weeks in June. Carl Edwards capitalized on a late-race pit strategy to win the 2008 Pennsylvania 500 at the Pocono Raceway. Edwards last pitted with 35 laps remaining and had just enough fuel remaining to score his second win at the 2.5-mile triangular track. It was his fourth victory of the season and the 11th of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career. Edwards, who captured the Pocono 500 in 2005, defeated Tony Stewart by almost four seconds. Edwards started 15th on the grid and led six times for 53 laps, including the final 14. Pole sitter Jimmie Johnson finished third, while Mark Martin, who placed eighth, led for a race-high 55 laps. Kurt Busch won the 2007 Pennsylvania 500 with a dominating performance at Pocono Raceway. Busch led 175 of 200 laps and crossed the finish line four seconds ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr for his first Cup victory of that season and the 16th of his career. Busch, who now totals 22 career titles, has finished first or second at this race five times in the past eight years. In 2006, pole sitter Hamlin dominated the race, leading for 151 laps, as he posted his second career Sprint Cup title, both at Pocono. Hamlin, who led five times during the race, reclaimed the lead on lap 181 of the scheduled 200-lap race and held on to edge 2005 winner Kurt Busch by 1.510 seconds. In the 65 previous races at Pocono, the pole sitter has won 14. Six of those wins came in the second race and the last coming in 2006. 47 of 65 Pocono races have been won from a top-10 start. When Carl Edwards won in 2005, he came for the 29th starting position, the deepest in the field that a race winner has started. Jimmie Johnson scored the double in 2004, as he raced to victory in both the Pocono 500 and the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. Johnson crossed the finish line 2.138 seconds ahead of runner-up Mark Martin to complete the season sweep at the 2.5-mile tri-oval. Johnson led a race-high 124 laps en route to the victory after starting 14th on the grid. In 23 years of twice-a-year racing at Pocono (since 1982) a sweep has occurred only six times: Bobby Allison (1982), Bill Elliott (1985), Tim Richmond (1986), Bobby Labonte (1999), Johnson (2004) and Hamlin (2006). Bill Elliott is the only driver to repeat as champion of the race in back-to- back years when he titled here in 1988-89. Overall, Elliott captured this race four times, the last coming in 2002 and is a five-time champion and pole sitter at Pocono. Denny Hamlin won his first two races at Pocono, claiming both victories from the pole. His last two races there, however, have resulted in finishes outside the top 20 (23rd in 2008 and 38th in June). Although he has recorded three straight top-10 finishes at this race, Mark Martin has not fared well at Pocono Raceway. In fact, Pocono is one of just four current tracks that Martin has never won on. Martin has finished second six times at PR, but overall, he's 0-for-46. The Sprint Cup Series moves to New York next week for the August 8th running of the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen at Watkins Glen International. Tony Stewart is the defending race winner. 07/27 15:05:48 ET
