MLB:Mariners Cliff Lee says foot is fine after throwing 1st pitch off of mound

Cliff Lee was not even thinking about his surgically repaired foot while he stepped on the mound for the first time this spring.

Cliff Lee was more anxious about being able to command his fastballs for strikes during a ten minute bullpen session on Tuesday. This was his first since he joined the Mariners, and this came 19 days after surgery that removed a bone mass on the his left 'push off' foot.

"I did not at all think about my foot, I'm being honest with you," Lee said after throwing 45 pitches to Jason Phillips the bullpen catcher. "I was paying more attention to locating pitches and trying to get my mechanics where they should be. The foot thing is essentially behind me. I have felt fine for a while now, even I was sure that when I got here that I can jump right in with everybody.

"However this was somewhat a 'better safe than sorry' approach. Now that I am off the mound, I feel excellent and optimistic that this thing is behind me."

Lee came out unscathed from the bullpen session, though he threw about ten more pitches than he had planned on. He will take Wednesday off and will throw another bullpen session on Thursday.

Lee said, "I threw all my pitches. I was more effective locating fastballs even though it wasn't what I hoped to be. However, considering the circumstances, I feel good with where I am at."

Rick Adair, the Pitching Coach, watched Lee's session and said there is no reason not to think that he will be capable of starting a regular workload again.

Adair said, "He will be fine. He will be on schedule. He will have a lot of time to work out. He will be good."
