Diamondbacks, Bob Howry agree to terms on a 1 year deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks continued to improve their porous bullpen by agreeing to terms with free agent reliever Bob Howry to a 1 year deal, which includes a team option for 2011.

The value of the deal is unknown, but it is believed to be worth amid $2 and $3 million. This agreement was awaiting a physical and was finalized on Monday.

Howry, 36 years old, has been a solid reliever for the majority of his 12 year big league career. He has been durable, while averaging 75 appearances over the past 5 years, and effective with a 3.44 ERA over the past 6 seasons.

Last season, Howry threw 63 and 2/3 innings and had a 3.39 ERA with San Francisco.

Last season no team had a worse bullpen in the National League than the Diamondbacks with a 4.61 ERA. Howry joins right hander Aaron Heilman to help reinforce the Arizona bullpen. Heilman came over last month via a trade with the Cubs.

Both are very affordable, durable and have the experience to pitch late in games. With Juan Gutierrez, they will likely become set up men for closer Chad Qualls.

The Diamondbacks had to give up a second round draft pick to sign him, but the reserves on signing a pick is about $1 million which can help off set the cost. A number of teams are looking for closers and are able to afford a big ticket acquisition.

Howry is an Arizona native, he attended Glendale Deer Valley High School and said that he took less money so he could return home.

The Diamondbacks continue to pursue free agent second baseman Kelly Johnson, whom they made an offer believed to be around $2 million.
