MLB: Upton loses to Rays in arbitration

B.J. Upton lost his arbitration case on Saturday as a three person arbitrator panel sided with the Rays. Upton sought for $3.3 million, as the Rays offered $3 million.

The meeting was held on Friday in St. Petersburg, both sides were allowed an hour to state their case. Then both sides had thirty minutes of refutation time.

"(Saturday) formally marks the end of arbitration for us for this year," Andrew Friedman, Vice President of the Rays said. "We had many eligible players and we are happy to have this behind us so we can focus exclusively on getting prepared for this upcoming season."/p>

Friedman isn't a fan of the arbitration process. He has often said "Neither side succeeds". Upton's agent, Larry Reynolds, didn't immediately return a phone call to the Tampa Tribune.

Upton, who made $435,000 in 2009, was slowed by an offseason surgery, which limited his work in spring training, and had him on the disabled list during the first week of the season.

He finished the season with a .241 average, but was chosen American League Player of the Month in June when he hit .324 with 10 doubles, 5 home runs, 14 stolen bases and 22 RBI in 26 games. After that month, he batted .222 with 6 home runs and 33 RBIs.

Upton's season long slump changed his career long streak as the Rays leadoff hitter.

He still managed to make 141 starts in center field, where his 385 chances were third among the American League center fielders as well as his team high 5 assists that tied him for 4th in the league.
