MLB: Mauer gives no hint on status of contract

Joe Mauer stored boxes, shoes and equipment in his locker on Sunday. A group of journalists stood nearby, waiting to see what happened with his contract. He didn't unpack a new contract nor give any details on his contract situation.

"I am not about to get into this," the Twins' catcher said when asked about the chances of him becoming a free agent after this season. "It will only open a can of worms. I am just looking forward to this year, and that's what I am getting ready for."

Mauer's agent, Ron Shapiro, has been negotiating a new contract with the Twins for numerous weeks. Despite preceding reports which sides had the framework of a deal at place, it looks like spring training will begin on Monday with Mauer unsigned after this season. Scrutiny is bound to increase every day until the Twins and Mauer have a deal done.

Mauer was gracious for a few seconds when he spoke about the contract and was talkative about other subjects, for example Nick Blackburn's beard that he plans to cut off.

Until a contract is in place, there will be many days similar to Sunday, as he was to spill the beans otherwise give up information regarding his future with the club.

Mauer said, "Nothing is about to change. That's the policy we've taken. We aren't about to talk about the contract or anything like. That's what we're focusing on, is 2010. There is a lot of excitement and I do not want to take anything away from that."

Left hander, Glen Perkins did not throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. He wants to distance himself after last season, he filed a grievance lost service time as the Twins kept him in the minors while he was recovering.
