Groin strain has sent Granderson to DL

Odds & News | webmaster ( Wed 5th, May 2010 )

The Yankees have some big changes to make, with Curtis Granderson heading for the disabled list with a stressed left groin. "Curtis, has been sort of our captain on the field," said Nick Swisher.

Granderson, who stressed his groin while running the bases during a (7-6) loss against the White Sox, will most likely be replaced by Brett Gardner in center field. Gardner spent time with Melky Cabrera as the center fielder for the Yankees last season and is a great defensive player. Actually, in spring training Gardner was set to start at center before Granderson was signed.

LIMPING OFF: Curtis Granderson grimaces as he is led off the outfield by Joe Girardi, manager of the team, and another coach after he injured his left groin.

Though Gardner has the speed to play center, he has been starting in left and thus he will also need to be replaced in left field. Girardi said he will use both, Marcus Thames and Randy Winn at left. The Yankees could even utilize a righty-lefty combo with the switch hitting Winn and the righty Thames, who has been nearly perfect in limited action this season (.550 average, 1 home run and 3 RBIs in 20 at bats).

"I am not going to change anything," said Thames. "If my name is on the lineup sheet, I will be ready to play."

To replace Granderson on the active list, the Yankees momentarily recalled Mark Melancon, the right-handed reliever from AAA Scranton as Girardi noted the bullpen was exhausted after throwing 6 innings in relief from Javier Vazquez's last outing. Melancon had a 1.76 ERA in 10 AAA games.

The Yankees will soon need to call up an outfielder, most likely Greg Golson from AAA. The other outfielder choices are Jon Weber, David Winfree and Colin Curtis.
