Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Raul Ibanez belted a pair of solo homers and Brad Wilkerson delivered the go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning in Seattle's 8-5 victory over the Angels.
Ibanez drove in three runs and Felix Hernandez struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings for the Mariners, who have won three of their last four games. Hernandez (1-0), who hadn't allowed a run coming into the contest, gave up nine hits and four runs, while walking three to put his ERA at 1.66 for the season.
Mark Lowe pitched the final inning for his first career save. He became the third different Mariner to earn a save this year, other than the injured J.J. Putz.
"I've been feeling pretty good at the plate and seeing pitches and I've been pleased with the way things have been going," Ibanez said. "I don't want to overstate it too much, today was one day."
Jered Weaver (1-2) surrendered four hits and five runs with four walks and three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings for Los Angeles.
Jeff Mathis and Gary Matthews Jr. each homered for the Angels in the opener of the three-game series.
"We left a lot of guys on base, had a lot of opportunities with guys in scoring position and we didn't do as well as we usually do," LA coach Mike Scioscia said.
Matthews led off the sixth with a homer to center, and later in the inning Casey Kotchman's infield hit scored Garret Anderson to give the Angels a 3-2 lead.
The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning thanks to a double from Jose Lopez, and walks to Ibanez and Jose Vidro. Richie Sexson's walk then tied the game before Wilkerson singled to right-center field.
The Angels got one back in the seventh when Erick Aybar doubled and later scored on a base hit up the middle by Vladimir Guerrero.
Seattle bounced back though in the bottom half as Ichiro Suzuki doubled to lead off, and, with one out, Ibanez laced a ground-rule double off reliever Darren Oliver, a one-hopper over the wall in left-center field for a 6-4 margin.
Two errors by the Mariners gave the Angels life in the eighth. Torii Hunter singled and Kotchman then reached base on an error from reliever Sean Green, as he threw the ball into the outfield trying to record the out at second. Sexson's fielding error then allowed Hunter to score. LA loaded the bases later in the inning, but Green escaped the jam by getting Matthews to fly out to left.
Kenji Johjima doubled in a run in the Seattle eighth and then scored on a Yuniesky Betancourt triple.
Ibanez homered in the first inning, but Mathis led off the third with a blast over the wall in left. Ibanez gave the Mariners a 2-1 lead with his second homer of the night, a shot to right with one out in the fourth.
