Olsen, Ramirez power Marlins past Nationals

Sun 20th, April 2008

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Scott Olsen threw seven brilliant innings and Hanley Ramirez homered twice to lead the Florida Marlins past the Washington Nationals, 6-1, in the finale of a three-game set.

Olsen (3-0) gave up only one run and three hits in his time on the mound for the Marlins, who have won two straight after dropping their previous two. Dan Uggla and Jorge Cantu each collected a pair of hits, while Jeremy Hermida knocked in a run.

"Everybody wants to finish what they started but as long as we win the game I don't care if I go five innings or eight innings," Olsen said. "It just doesn't make a difference."

Austin Kearns hit a solo home run for Washington, which has dropped three of its last four games and 13 of 16 in the month of April.

"I'm as frustrated as anybody," Washington catcher Johnny Estrada said. "We're just playing losing baseball right now, that's the bottom line. We need to scratch and claw our way to some wins."

Nats starter Odalis Perez went six innings and yielded an unearned run on five hits in the no decision. Luis Ayala (0-1) absorbed the loss after giving up a home run in the seventh.

The Marlins jumped on the board with a first-inning run. Uggla reached second on a throwing error by Ryan Zimmerman, and Hermida followed with a broken-bat RBI single.

Kearns evened things up with a lead-off homer in the fifth.

Ayala came on for the Nats in the seventh, and his first pitch was taken over the fence in center field by Ramirez, giving the Marlins a 2-1 edge.

Florida tacked on four off Saul Rivera in the eighth. Back-to-back doubles from Cantu and Cody Ross sparked the surge, and pinch-hitter Luis Gonzalez drew a two-out walk to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Cantu and on the play a throwing error also allowed Ross to cross the plate. Ramirez then followed with a two-run home run.

Kevin Gregg tossed the ninth inning for the Marlins.
