Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Cliff Lee tossed his first career major league shutout as Cleveland edged Kansas City, 2-0, sweeping a doubleheader at Kauffman Stadium.
Lee (4-0) was tremendous in the start, scattering just three hits, fanning nine batters and walking none to lower his earned run average to a miniscule 0.28 on the season. The 29-year-old lefty is off to the best start of his major league career and has given up just 10 hits and one earned run in 31 2/3 innings of work overall.
"Things have been going good," said Lee. "I know that I worked in the off- season and had a full spring to prepare for the season. I don't think I expected it to go this well, but I knew that if I got off to a healthy start I'd be successful."
David Dellucci's solo homer broke a scoreless contest, Travis Hafner had two hits and scored a run, and Asdrubal Cabrera chipped in with an RBI for Cleveland, which swept the three-game series and has won five of its last seven games.
The loss went to Brian Bannister (3-2), who was charged with two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings. He fanned four and didn't walk a batter, but his solid outing failed to halt what is now a seven-game skid for Kansas City.
"I was pitching so well and I know my pitch count wasn't high," said Bannister. "I had the same intention of doing what he (Cliff Lee) did tonight. I wanted to be the last guy standing. I went out there and tried to throw. It was just frustrating."
In the opener, Grady Sizemore had four hits, including a solo homer, and also drove in two runs as the Indians held off the Royals, 9-6.
Lee and Bannister dueled for six innings, but it was Cleveland that broke through in the seventh. Dellucci mashed a first-pitch fastball over the wall in right to lead off, and Hafner followed with a double. Ryan Garko's groundout then moved him to third, and after Jhonny Peralta was also retired, Cabrera's double upped the lead to 2-0.
The Royals managed just one hit the rest of the way, as David DeJesus singled with two outs in the ninth. Esteban Germany grounded out to end the game.
