Orioles open lengthy trek at Angel Stadium

Fri 2nd, May 2008

(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles begin a 10-game road trip tonight, as they head out west to battle the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the start of a three-game series at Angel Stadium.

The Orioles are 5-7 on the road and won't play in Baltimore again until May 13. The club played its last three at home, losing two of three to the Tampa Bay Rays.

That includes Thursday's 4-2 setback. Adam Jones hit a two-run homer, while Brian Burres (3-2) suffered the loss for giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts in six-plus innings of work. It was Baltimore's fourth loss in its last five games overall.

Brian Roberts, though, finished 1-for-3 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. He is batting .350 (14-for-40) in that span.

Roberts, though, doesn't have a hit in five career at-bats versus Jered Weaver, tonight's starter for the Angels. In fact, Roberts, Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff are a combined 0-for-13 against him.

Weaver has never given up a run to Baltimore, tossing 14 shutout innings over two starts against them, winning both tests while allowing nine hits.

The right-hander settled down in his last start after back-to-back shaky outings. Weaver gave up a total of 20 hits and eight runs (7 earned) over 11 innings before holding Detroit to two runs on four hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings of a win on Sunday. The victory improved Weaver's record to 2-3 on the year with a 4.21 earned run average.

Weaver will also try to stabilize a pitching staff that was shelled in Thursday's 15-8 loss to Oakland. The trio of Nick Adenhart, Dustin Moseley and Darren O'Day proved ineffective in the loss.

Adenhart, making his first major league appearance, walked five batters, including four in a row during the second inning, and was lifted after allowing three hits and five runs in two-plus frames. Moseley (1-3) was pounded for seven hits and five runs in two frames, and O'Day was drilled for four hits and four runs while recording just two outs in the fifth.

Adenhart was replacing Moseley in the rotation, but it didn't help as Oakland pounded out a season-high 20 hits.

Erick Aybar clubbed a three-run homer for Los Angeles, and Mike Napoli added a solo shot as the Angels had a two-game win streak snapped.

Before the game, the Angels placed infielder Maicer Izturis on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained lower back. Izturis is batting just .197 (14- for-71) with 10 RBI, five stolen bases and 11 runs scored in 22 games this season.

Jeremy Guthrie will once again attempt to halt his lengthy winless stretch when he starts tonight for Baltimore. Guthrie hasn't posted a win in his last 15 outings, going 0-5 since defeating the New York Yankees on July 27 of last year. That includes an 0-3 mark and 4.34 ERA in six starts this season.

The right-hander has lost his last two starts and fell in defeat on Sunday versus the Chicago White Sox after yielding three runs on five hits in five innings of work. He was touched for two home runs for the second time this season while striking out five.

Guthrie is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three outings (2 starts) lifetime against the Angels. He last faced them on July 1 of 2007 and took the loss after giving up four runs over eight innings of work, striking out seven.

The Angels won seven of 10 versus the Orioles last year, including three of four at home, and are 17-9 against them since the start of the 2005 season.
