Phillies target third straight win against Giants

(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies try to stay in the win column this evening when they play the second of three games against the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia won in dramatic fashion in the opener of this set on Friday, as Pat Burrell's two-out, two-run home run off Brian Wilson in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Phillies to a 6-5 win.

After former Phillie Aaron Rowand gave the Giants the lead with a solo homer in the top of the inning, Wilson came on to try and lock up the save. He allowed a one-out single to Chase Utley, and after Ryan Howard was called out on strikes, Burrell turned on a 3-2 fastball and launched it into the left field seats for a game-ending blast.

Utley went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for the Phillies, winners in nine of 12. Pedro Feliz had two hits, including a two-run blast, in his first game against the team he spent the first eight years of his major league career with before signing with Philadelphia in the offseason.

Burrell's blast made a winner out of J.C. Romero (2-0), who won despite allowing a run on three hits in the tenth inning. Kyle Kendrick pitched six- plus solid innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while tying a career high with six strikeouts.

John Bowker had his first career four-hit game for the Giants, who lost despite a 16 to eight advantage in hits. Randy Winn went 3-for-5, while Rowand, Jose Castillo and Emmanuel Burriss each collected a pair of hits.

Wilson (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Starter Pat Misch allowed four runs on five hits over four frames, but five San Francisco relievers combined to allow one hit over the next five innings.

Heading to the hill tonight for the Phillies will be right-hander Brett Myers, who is 2-2 this season with a 5.11 ERA. Myers was tagged with the loss on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, as he surrendered four runs and eight hits in five innings.

Myers has faced the Giants six times (four starts) and is 1-3 against them with a pair of saves and an 8.53 ERA.

San Francisco will counter with 23-year-old righty Matt Cain, who is coming off his first win of the season. Cain defeated the Colorado Rockies on Monday, scattering four hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings to run his record to 1-2, while lowering his ERA to 4.41.

Over his last two starts, Myers has given up 10 runs and 19 hits in 12 innings. He has also served up a major league-worst 10 homers in just 37 frames.

Cain is 0-2 lifetime against the Phils, yielding 14 runs in just 13 innings, spanning three starts.

San Francisco and Philadelphia split eight matchups in 2007, but the Phillies are 15-6 over the past 21 meetings in this series. Philly is also 9-2 in the City of Brotherly Love during that span.
