Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Jose Reyes went 4-for-5 with two triples and a double to propel the New York Mets to a 7-2 win over Arizona in the opener of a three-game set with the Diamondbacks.
David Wright went 3-for-5 with a double and two-run homer, while Ryan Church doubled and hit a solo shot for the Mets, who have won four of five. Moises Alou returned from the disabled list to play his first game of the season, as he was sidelined after undergoing hernia surgery, and went 1-for-3 with a run batted in.
John Maine (3-2) was solid in a six-inning start, giving up just two runs on six hits and a pair of walks, while getting six strikeouts.
Micah Owings (4-1) took his first loss of the season after struggling in 5 2/3 innings, as he allowed all seven runs on 11 hits and three walks, while striking out just two.
"I wasn't too sharp, didn't go into the game feeling 100 percent," Owings said. "But had to keep battling and the guys behind me too, just battle the whole night. The Mets, you have just got to tip your hat, they were on tonight."
Chris Young and Justin Upton each had two hits, while Miguel Montero added an RBI double for Arizona, which has lost two of three. Second baseman Orlando Hudson left in the fifth inning with a hamstring strain.
Reyes kicked off the game with a triple and scored on Church's sacrifice fly for a quick Mets lead. After Wright singled and Carlos Beltran walked, Alou slapped a single back up the middle to plate a run, and put runners on the corners.
"It's no secret that we usually play well when he is rolling, no secret that we're successful when he gets on base and does what he did tonight," Mets manager Willie Randolph said of Reyes. "We all feed off each other and especially off Jose."
A Carlos Delgado single scored Beltran to push New York's first-inning lead to 3-0, and the Mets tacked on another run in the second when Reyes and Church stroked consecutive doubles.
The Diamondbacks cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. Upton and Montero had back-to-back doubles of their own to get one run in, and a Young single plated Montero for a 4-2 score.
Church's fourth homer of the season in the fourth inning pushed the Mets' lead to three, and Wright slugged a ball deep over the left field wall for a 7-2 New York edge.
After Beltran walked, Owings' day ended after 107 pitches.
Reyes came to bat in the eighth, a homer short of the cycle, and looked like he might complete the deal. He lofted the ball to deep center that remained in the park, but glanced off Young's glove and rolled forward.
Reyes, meanwhile, was sprinting around the bases and rounded third as the throw from Young was heading in from the outfield. Augie Ojeda's relay to Montero was perfect, the Diamondbacks' catcher had plenty of time to set up in front and tag Reyes out.
Duaner Sanchez tossed a perfect ninth inning for the Mets to close out the game.
