Webb goes for seventh straight win versus Mets

(Sports Network) - Brandon Webb tries to become baseball's first seven-game winner this afternoon when the Arizona Diamondbacks continue their three-game series with the New York Mets at Chase Field.

Webb, the NL's Cy Young Award winner in 2006, won for the sixth time in six starts on Sunday in San Diego, as he held the Padres to an unearned run and five hits over six innings to improve to 6-0, while lowering his earned run average to a sparkling 1.98.

With a win today, Webb will match Randy Johnson's 2000 franchise record for most consecutive victories to start a season.

Webb, though, has struggled to get wins in his career against the Mets, going just 2-6 against them, despite a 2.26 ERA in nine starts.

New York will have young right-hander Mike Pelfrey on the hill, as he tries to get back in the win column. Pelfrey suffered his first loss of the season his last time out on April 25 against Atlanta, surrendering five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings to fall to 2-1 on the season, while raising his ERA to 4.43.

Pelfrey lost his only other start to the D'Backs, giving up a three runs and three hits in 5 1/3 frames.

New York continued its dominance in Arizona in the opener of this set on Friday, as Jose Reyes went 4-for-5 with two triples and a double to propel the Mets to a 7-2 win. David Wright went 3-for-5 with a double and two-run homer, while Ryan Church doubled and hit a solo shot for New York, which has won 13 of its last 14 in Arizona.

Moises Alou returned from the disabled list to play his first game of the season, as he was sidelined after undergoing hernia surgery, and went 1-for-3 with a run batted in to help the Met to their fourth win in their last five games overall.

John Maine (3-2) was solid in a six-inning start, giving up just two runs on six hits and a pair of walks, while getting six strikeouts.

Micah Owings (4-1) took his first loss of the season after struggling in 5 2/3 innings, as he allowed all seven runs on 11 hits and three walks, while striking out just two.

Chris Young and Justin Upton each had two hits, while Miguel Montero added an RBI double for Arizona, which has lost two of three.

Second baseman Orlando Hudson left in the fifth inning with a hamstring strain and is questionable for today's tilt.

New York has also won 17 of its last 22 overall matchups with the D'Backs.
