White Sox to square off again with Central-leading Twins

(Sports Network) - Kevin Slowey returns from the disabled list this afternoon to start the rubber match of the Minnesota Twins' three-game series with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Slowey, who turned 24 on Sunday, has been sidelined since April 4 with a right biceps strain. The 24-year-old sustained the injury in his season debut on April 3 against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He left that start after allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings and has not made an appearance since.

In two career games (1 start) against the White Sox, Slowey is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA.

After nearly getting no-hit in the series opener, Minnesota bounced back in a big way after a long weather delay on Wednesday. Carlos Gomez hit for the cycle and Livan Hernandez took a shutout into the ninth inning to lift the Twins to a 13-1 win over Chicago.

Gomez notched Minnesota's first cycle since Kirby Puckett accomplished the feat on August 1, 1986.

Meanwhile, Hernandez (5-1) threw his 44th career complete game and gave up just one run on nine hits for the Twins, who won for the sixth time in seven games.

Nick Punto finished 2-for-5 with five RBI, while Mike Redmond went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in for Minnesota.

In Tuesday's series opener, Chicago's Gavin Floyd took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but the tables were turned Wednesday. White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (1-4) was roughed up for seven runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Ehren Wassermann was also touched for five runs on four hits in one-third of an inning of relief.

A.J. Pierzynski went 3-for-4 and Jermaine Dye hit his fifth homer of the season for Chicago, which has lost seven of eight.

Getting the call for the White Sox tonight will be 23-year-old left-hander John Danks, who is 2-3 with a 3.12 ERA. Danks lost his second straight start on Saturday, when he gave up two runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Danks, who has given up just four runs in his last two outings, is 1-3 lifetime against the Twins with an 8.35 ERA in four starts.

Minnesota took three of four from the White Sox earlier in the year after these teams split their 18 matchups a year ago. The Twins were just 4-5 in Chicago last season.
