(Sports Network) - John Lackey makes his season debut this evening when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim play the third test of their four-game series with the Chicago White Sox at Angel Stadium.
An All-Star for the first time in 2007, Lackey posted a record of 19-9 with a league-leading 3.01 earned run average in 33 starts last season, but has been sidelined since March 21 with a strained right triceps.
The 29-year-old right-hander is only 3-4 lifetime against the White Sox with a 4.30 ERA in nine starts.
The Angels can only hope that Lackey gives them as good of an effort as Jered Weaver did in the second game of this series on Tuesday when he tossed seven innings of one-hit ball in Los Angeles' 2-0 win.
Weaver actually had a no-hitter through four frames, but had thrown more than 70 pitches in the span and ended up with a no-decision. He struck out six and walked two. Scot Shields (2-0) threw a scoreless eighth and got the win.
Mike Napoli's sacrifice fly got the Halos on the board and Robb Quinlan went 2-for-4 with an RBI as well, while Garret Anderson added a pair of hits for the Angels, who have won two straight after a four-game slide.
John Danks scattered seven hits in 6 1/3 innings for Chicago, which has lost three in a row and 10 of 14. Octavio Dotel (1-2) bailed out Danks by getting the last two outs of the seventh with the bases loaded, but gave up one single to lead off the eighth inning and was on the hook for the loss.
The White Sox will pin their hopes tonight on righty Jose Contreras, who is 3-3 with a 3.66 ERA. Contreras won for the second time in three starts on Friday against the Seattle Mariners, as he allowed a run and six hits in seven innings.
Contreras has faced the Angels eight times and is 4-3 against them with a 3.63 ERA.
Chicago won five of its nine matchups with the Angels last season and is 11-9 in the series since the start of the 2006 campaign, including wins in seven of its last 11 in Anaheim.
