(Sports Network) - Right-hander and Florida native Bronson Arroyo takes a turn on short rest tonight when the Cincinnati Reds host the Florida Marlins in game three of a four-game series at Great American Ball Park.
Arroyo returns to the mound after starting May 10 at New York and defeating the Mets, 7-1, with eight innings of four-hit, one-run ball. The Key West native is 1-0 with a 3.05 earned run average in three career starts on short rest.
Now 31, Arroyo is 2-1 in three starts since opening the season with three losses and two no-decisions in his initial five outings. He righted the ship with a win at St. Louis on April 28, then followed it 13 days later against the Mets.
He is 0-3 in four starts in Cincinnati this season and 0-1 in five career appearances against the Marlins.
Florida right-hander Ricky Nolasco seeks a second straight win.
He was 1-3 with a 6.10 earned run average in his initial seven appearances of the season before May 9, when he allowed four hits and a run over six innings of a 7-3 defeat of Washington.
Overall, in six starts and two relief appearances, Nolasco has allowed 40 hits and 22 earned runs in 37 innings, walking 13 and striking out 21.
He is 0-1 in two career appearances against the Reds, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs in seven innings.
On Tuesday, Edinson Volquez continued his strong rookie year, holding the Marlins to one run in six innings, but Cincinnati's 5-3 win over Florida came coupled with the loss of shortstop Jeff Keppinger, who left with a broken kneecap after fouling a ball off his left knee.
Keppinger, who leads the club with a .324 batting average and 21 runs batted in, fouled a ball off the kneecap in the second inning, but remained in the game until he was lifted in the fourth. X-rays revealed the fracture, and he is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Wednesday.
Volquez (6-1), meanwhile, scattered seven hits and two walks while fanning five for the Reds, who have won three of four, including the first two of this four-game set. Joey Votto went 2-for-3 and hit a solo homer for Cincinnati.
Mark Hendrickson (5-2) was roughed up for eight hits and four runs in five innings, walking five and striking out four to take the loss.
Cody Ross hit a pinch-hit solo homer to make it a two-run game in the eighth, but that was as close as the Marlins would get. Florida had won seven straight prior to this series.
Cincinnati went 4-3 against the Marlins in 2007, with a 3-0 mark at Great American Ball Park. The Reds are 10-5 in the last 15 meetings in this series, including a 7-1 ledger at home.
