Giles lifts Padres past Seattle

Fri 16th, May 2008

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Brian Giles went 4-for-5, drove in two runs, scored once and is now 7-for-9 with three doubles in his last two games, as the San Diego Padres edged the Seattle Mariners, 6-4, in the opener of a three-game interleague set.

Tadahito Iguchi went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and finished with two runs batted in and two scored for the Padres, who have only won in two of their last five contests. Khalil Greene and Josh Bard had an RBI apiece in the win.

Chris Young (4-3) took the win after going six innings and giving up four runs on five hits. Trevor Hoffman earned his eighth save of the year with three strikeouts in the ninth.

"He (Young) pitched well, his stuff was there all night," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He pitched well enough that he deserved to get the win. The only pitch he wishes he could have back was the pitch to Johjima."

Ichiro Suzuki snapped an 0-16 slump with a single in the seventh for the M's, who have dropped three of four. Kenji Johjima went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, while Yuniesky Betancourt and Jeff Clement had an RBI each.

Miguel Batista (3-5) took the loss after he was touched for six runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

The Padres wasted no time in getting on the board. Jody Gerut led off the game with a triple and touched home when Iguchi hit a single up the middle. Giles cracked a double to right field and Iguchi came around. Adrian Gonzalez grounded out, Tony Clark walked and Kevin Kouzmanoff was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Greene offered a sac fly to right to score Giles and San Diego went up 3-0 after half an inning of play.

Iguchi blasted a solo homer in the second for the 4-0 cushion.

"It's nice for us to start from the first inning, get some runs, take some pressure off our pitching," said Giles. "Not make them feel like they have to make a perfect pitch every pitch. Hopefully, it did that for C.Y. (Young). He's a grinder, he's going to keep you in the game, and give you opportunities to win."

Seattle inched its way back in the second. Raul Ibanez led off with a single and, two batters later, Johjima deposited a homer over the fence in left. Wladimir Balentien kept it going with a ground-rule double and Betancourt brought him home with another double. The Mariners had closed it to 4-3 after the second.

San Diego tacked on another in the third. Bard's double scored Greene from second, and the Padres had a two-run lead.

Ibanez led off the home third with a double, moved to second on Sexson's fly out and crossed home when Clement grounded out. Seattle was within 5-4 after three frames.

Scott Hairston walked to lead off the sixth and Gerut followed with a single. Iguchi then grounded into a force, with Hairston moving to third and Gerut out at second.

Ryan Rowland-Smith came on in relief and gave up an RBI single to Giles, and San Diego's lead was back at two runs.
