Padres need 13 innings to down San Fran; Giants turn triple play

Sat 31st, May 2008

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Justin Huber's pinch-hit, two-run single highlighted a four-run 13th inning, as the Padres beat San Francisco, 7-3, on a night the Giants turned a triple play.

Cha Seung Baek (1-0) struck out the side in the 12th to get the win in his first game for the Padres since being acquired from Seattle on Wednesday, Trevor Hoffman pitched the 13th to close out the game.

The combination of Heath Bell, Mike Adams, Cla Meredith, Baek and Hoffman retired the final 17 San Francisco batters.

The Padres had 10 hits, but went 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position, yet still managed to win for the fourth time in five games. Brian Giles had a two-run triple in the opener of the three-game series.

Billy Sadler (0-1) walked Khalil Greene with the bases loaded and then hit Michael Barrett with a pitch to lose his first career decision in the majors.

John Bowker and Randy Winn each had two hits and an RBI for the Giants, who had their three-game win streak broken.

The Giants pulled off the triple play in the eighth inning. Alex Hinshaw walked Giles to start the inning and Adrian Gonzalez followed with a single to left. Keiichi Yabu was then summoned from the bullpen and he got Kevin Kouzmanoff to hit a ball toward third base. Jose Castillo stepped on the base, threw to second baseman Ray Durham for the force play and the return throw to Bowker at first easily got Kouzmanoff.

It was the first triple play completed by the Giants since a June 14, 1999 contest at Colorado, and the first at home by the team since Oct. 3, 1980, against San Diego at Candlestick Park.

Kouzmanoff grounded into a double play in the 11th, but the Padres finally broke through in the 13th. Tadahito Iguchi walked and Giles doubled to right field. Gonzalez was intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out, and after Kouzmanoff popped out, Green walked on a high pitch. A pitch from Sadler then grazed Barrett on his left arm.

Vinnie Chulk then surrendered Huber's two-run single to center.

It was the second extra-inning game of the week for the Padres, who beat Cincinnati, 12-9, in 18 frames on Sunday.

Greg Maddux was charged with five hits and two runs, while striking out five in six innings for San Diego. Giants starter Matt Cain fanned six, while allowing seven hits and three runs through the first seven innings.

The Giants broke on top in the opening inning. Fred Lewis led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a grounder and scored on Winn's sacrifice fly.

San Diego came back with a three-spot in the third. Jody Gerut singled, Iguchi doubled and Giles tripled to the gap in right-center. Gonzalez followed with a double to right field.

Aaron Rowand singled in Winn in the fourth and the Giants tied it in the seventh when Durham walked, went to second on a balk by Bryan Corey and scored on a base hit up the middle by Bowker.
