(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles will attempt to halt a three-game losing skid as they play the third of four straight games against the Boston Red Sox this afternoon at Camden Yards.
On Saturday, Manny Ramirez hit his 500th career home run, a two-out solo shot in the seventh inning, as Boston rallied past Baltimore, 6-3.
David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia also homered for the Red Sox, who have won the first two games of this set. David Aardsma (2-1) notched the win with two scoreless relief innings of starter Jon Lester, who allowed seven hits and three runs over five full frames.
The record long ball, Ramirez's 10th homer of the season, traveled an estimated 410 feet. Of his 500 home runs, 236 came with Cleveland and 264 with Boston. Ramirez joined Jimmie Foxx and Ted Williams as the only players to reach the milestone with the Red Sox.
Ortiz left the game in the ninth inning with a left wrist injury after fouling off a pitch. X-rays taken after the game proved negative, and the designated hitter is listed as day-to-day.
Coco Crisp added an RBI for Boston on a double-play groundout in the eighth, and Hideki Okajima held Baltimore off the board in the home half. The Orioles put two men on with one out against closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth, but Nick Markakis lined into a game-ending double-play as Papelbon earned his 16th save.
Brian Roberts homered and Jay Payton and Adam Jones also knocked in runs for the Orioles.
Lance Cormier (0-2) took the loss, charged with two runs on three hits over 1 1/3 innings. Starter Garrett Olson allowed just three hits and a pair of runs over five innings in the no-decision.
Prior to the game, the Sox activated pitcher Clay Buchholz off the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Pawtucket
Boston will give the ball to Bartolo Colon today with the hopes that he can continue his impressive pitching. Colon has only pitched in two games thus far, but both have resulted in victory and he owns a 2.25 ERA.
The burly hurler is coming off a win over Seattle on Monday in which he permitted a mere one earned run on five hits in seven innings.
For his career against Baltimore, Colon is 8-6 with a 3.27 ERA.
Brian Burres will take the mound for the Orioles this afternoon, and the lefty is 4-4 with a 4.15 ERA. Burres has only 29 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings of action, so he relies on his teammates to make plays in the field.
Burres was dominated by the Yankees on Tuesday to the tune of 10 hits and eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, and he was fortunate to get a no-decision.
Over five appearances (4 starts), Burres is 1-0 lifetime against Boston with a 3.07 ERA.
Baltimore swept a two-game home set over Boston in mid-May, but has still lost 18 of its last 25 at home versus the Red Sox.
