Rays, Rangers continue set in Arlington

Sat 7th, June 2008

(Sports Network) - In the second installment of a three-game set, the Tampa Bay Rays will battle the Texas Rangers this evening at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Andy Sonnanstine will try to return to the win column when he takes the mound for the Rays. After winning five of his previous six starts, the right-hander has lost two of his last three outings.

The last time Sonnanstine was on the hill, the Rays collected a 4-3 victory over Chicago. Sonnanstine only lasted 5 2/3 innings against the White Sox and surrendered three runs on 10 hits.

The 25-year-old has been beaten and battered by the Rangers in his brief career, getting hammered for 12 runs on 17 hits in just 9 1/3 innings of work. Earlier this season Texas pounded Sonnanstine for seven runs -- two earned -- on 10 hits in only five innings.

Scott Feldman will take the mound for the Rangers, and will try for his first victory in nearly a month. Since being called up in late April, Feldman has been very inconsistent and has not won since defeating Oakland 4-0 on May 9th.

This past Monday the 25-year-old surrendered four runs on four hits and two walks in a 13-8 setback to Oakland. It was the third consecutive start that Feldman surrendered more than three runs.

Feldman has never started against Tampa, but the young hurler has made four relief appearances agaisnt the Rays, going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in those outings.

Yesterday, Scott Kazmir tossed eight brilliant frames and the Rays scored nine runs in the last two innings to seal a 12-4 victory over the Rangers.

Kazmir (6-1) extended his unbeaten streak to six games, allowing just two runs on six hits without a walk. He fanned six in the gem, helping Tampa snap a three-game losing streak.

Evan Longoria, B. J. Upton, Dioner Navarro and Eric Hinske all homered for the Rays, who pounded out 12 runs on 13 hits.

Vicente Padilla (7-3) pitched an effective six innings, surrendering three runs on five hits and two walks, retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced. The hard-luck loser dropped a decision for the first time since April 22.

Ian Kinsler homered and Marlon Byrd doubled with two RBI for Texas, which has dropped two of its last three.

Tampa Bay won two of three games versus Texas this season from May 26-28 at Tropicana Field.
