(Sports Network) - New York Yankees starting pitcher Mike Mussina has been consistent all season and is showing no signs of slowing down. This afternoon Mussina will try to lead the Yankees past the Kansas City Royals in the finale of a four-game series from the Bronx.
Mussina has won three straight starts with a 3.71 earned run average over that span. He is also 8-1 over his past nine trips to the mound to run his record to 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA in 13 outings in 2008. Mussina last toed the rubber Wednesday versus Toronto and limited the Blue Jays to a run in six innings of a 5-1 triumph at Yankee Stadium.
He is now tied with Cleveland's Cliff Lee and Joe Saunders of the Angels for the most wins in the American League. Lee and Saunders are both scheduled to pitch this evening.
The right-handed Mussina has enjoyed success throughout his career against Kansas City, having gone 17-7 with a 2.98 earned run average and four complete games in 33 appearances. He went 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two starts versus the Royals last season.
New York hopes Mussina will have another solid performance on Monday as it wraps up a seven-game homestand. The Yankees, who are 18-14 as the host this season, posted a 6-3 win over the Royals on Sunday. Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer and Jason Giambi broke a sixth-inning tie with a solo blast as the Yankees moved over the .500 mark at 32-31.
Johnny Damon, on the heels of a 6-for-6 effort that included the game-winning hit in Saturday's 12-11 slugfest, was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored on Sunday.
Yankees young pitcher Joba Chamberlain made his second start and was much improved over his last outing. After working just 2 1/3 innings five days earlier against Toronto, Chamberlain made it into the fifth on Sunday. He was limited to a pitch count of about 75 and threw 78, while allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Dan Giese, who absorbed the loss in relief of Chamberlain against the Blue Jays, earned his first big league win on Sunday. He tossed 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball, striking out three batters without a walk.
Kansas City will close out a seven-game road trip on Monday and is 1-5 so far on the swing. In Sunday's loss, Jose Guillen homered again for the Royals after going deep twice and driving in seven runs the day before.
Royals starter Zack Greinke was charged with four runs on six hits with four walks over five innings in a losing effort.
Kansas City is 12-23 as the guest in 2008.
Luke Hochevar gets the ball for the Royals on Monday, and he is 3-5 with a 5.13 earned run average in nine starts this season. Hochevar has been struggling as of late, having gone 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA in his four most recent trips to the mound.
Hochevar last pitched Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox, allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-4 setback for a no-decision. The right-hander squared off with the Yankees for the first time in his career on September 8 of last season, and gave up three hits in three shutout innings of relief.
The Royals have fared very poorly at Yankee Stadium over the years, having amassed a 3-24 record as the visitor in this series since 2001.
