Tigers' Wilson could miss rest of season

Thu 12th, June 2008

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Detroit Tigers catcher Vance Wilson has torn a ligament in his elbow and will have to undergo Tommy John surgery, likely sometime next week.

After playing on Detroit's 2006 World Series squad, Wilson missed the entire 2007 season with a ligament tear that he thought had been repaired by surgery last June. He spent the rest of 2007 and the offseason rehabbing the elbow.

As Wilson began throwing more extensively in the spring and into the season he felt a pop in his elbow that he assumed to be the natural tearing of scar tissue. The discomfort continued for three weeks, however, and he realized that it may be more serious.

The 35-year-old Wilson, who is in the final season of a two-year contract, had an MRI that revealed the tear.
