Giants try to make it two in a row in KC

Sat 21st, June 2008

(Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants try to make it two straight wins this evening when they continue their three-game interleague set with the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

San Francisco won for just the third time in its last 10 tries on Friday, as Ray Durham hit a go-ahead, three-run double in the top of the sixth inning and the Giants scored nine unanswered runs in a 9-4 win.

Matt Cain (4-5) settled down after giving up three runs in the first inning, hurling eight innings for the win. The right-hander allowed four runs -- three earned -- on five hits, while fanning eight and walking one.

The Giants had lost five of six coming into the game, but rattled off 14 hits, three coming from Durham. Aaron Rowand doubled twice, scored and drove in a run and Randy Winn went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

Luke Hochevar started strong for Kansas City but allowed four runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision. Yasuhiko Yabuta (1-3) took the loss in relief, getting tagged for three runs in just an inning of work for the Royals, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.

Jose Guillen knocked in a pair of runs in defeat, while Mark Grudzielanek went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Kevin Correia will take the hill for the Giants on Saturday, and he is just 1-4 with a 5.17 ERA in six starts this season.

Correia is 0-3 in the past four trips to the mound and lost to Oakland on June 15 in his previous outing. He was reached for five runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 5-3 setback at AT&T Park.

The right-hander, who is 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA on the road this season, has never faced the Royals in his career.

Kansas City hopes Gil Meche can stay on the winning track when he takes the ball this evening. Meche was 0-3 in five starts before beating Arizona on the road on JUne 15 at Chase Field. In the 8-3 victory over the Diamondbacks, Meche permitted three runs and four hits in 7 1/3 innings.

The right-hander, though, is only 1-4 with a 6.46 earned run average at home this season. He faced San Francisco once before on June 17 of the 2006 season, hurling a complete game in an 8-1 victory. Meche allowed one run and five hits while striking out seven batters.

San Francisco and Kansas City are meeting for the first time since the Royals won two of three games by the Bay in 2005. Kansas City is 4-3 in its seven matchups with the Giants and 7-3 versus the National League this season.

The Giants are just 2-8 in interleague play in 2008.
