Myers hopes to right ship against Halos

(Sports Network) - Brett Myers has been atrocious on the mound this season for the Philadelphia Phillies. The starting pitcher will try to get back on track this evening, when the Phillies resume a three-game interleague series versus the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Citizens Bank Park.

Myers has lost two straight and seven of his last eight decisions to fall to 3-8 with a 5.58 earned run average in 15 starts this season. The Phillies are only 4-11 when Myers takes the ball this year. In his most recent start on June 15 at St. Louis, Myers did not factor in the 7-6 loss despite allowing six runs and eight hits in six frames.

The fiery right-hander, who is 3-2 in seven home starts in 2008, faced the Angels on June 11 of the 2003 season at Anaheim. Myers was saddled with the loss after the 5-3 defeat, allowing five runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Joe Saunders, meanwhile, will try to continue his strong season when he takes the ball for the Angels on Saturday. Saunders is 4-2 over his last six starts, having beaten Atlanta on June 15 at Angel Stadium.

Saunders hurled 7 1/3 shutout frames of six-hit ball in a 2-0 victory, while striking out three batters. The effort pushed his mark to 10-3 with a 3.06 earned run average in 14 starts this season.

The left-handed Virginia Tech product, who is 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA in six road starts this season, has never faced the Phillies.

In the opener of this set on Friday, Ervin Santana was dominant on the mound and Los Angeles pounded out a season-high 17 hits in a 7-1 win. Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run home run and added an RBI single for the Angels, who made their first-ever trip to the City of Brotherly Love.

Garret Anderson finished 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored for LA, which has won two of three. Howie Kendrick went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run batted in, while Jeff Mathis was 2-for-3, walked twice and drove in a run.

Santana (9-3) held the Phillies to one unearned run on two hits and struck out a season-high-tying nine batters in seven innings of work.

Adam Eaton (2-5) was roughed up for six runs on 12 hits and three walks in five-plus innings to absorb the loss for Philadelphia, which has dropped five of its last six outings.

The Phillies generated only two hits, a one-out single by Shane Victorino in the first and a two-out double by Chris Coste in the second.

Chase Utley's sacrifice fly knocked in the Phillies lone run, but the second baseman still finished 0-for-3 to extend his hitless streak to a career-worst 0-for-23.
