(Sports Network) - Daryl Thompson makes his major league debut this afternoon when the Cincinnati Reds play the second of three games against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
The 22-year-old right-hander began the season at Double-A Chattanooga before advancing to Triple-A Louisville. He combined to go 6-2, with a 2.22 earned run average, despite having never pitched above Single-A prior to this season.
Thompson, who takes over for the recently demoted Homer Bailey, is the fifth different player to make his major league debut for the Reds this season and joins a rotation that already includes 24-year-old Edinson Volquez and 22- year-old Johnny Cueto.
Volquez tossed seven solid innings in the opener of this set, and Jolbert Cabrera had a two-run double, leading Cincinnati to a 4-2 win. Cabrera was 4- for-4 before leaving with an injury for the Reds, who snapped a five-game skid.
Cabrera suffered a dislocated left index finger on a headfirst slide while advancing to second on a wild pitch during the seventh inning.
Volquez (10-2) surrendered just two runs on seven hits, while walking one and fanning five to pick up his 10th win of the season. The hard-throwing, right- hander leads the major leagues with a miniscule 1.71 earned run average.
Johnny Damon and Robinson Cano each had an RBI single for the Yankees, who lost for the first time in eight games.
Mike Mussina (10-5) allowed four runs on 10 hits in eight innings en route to his first loss since May 20.
The Yankees will hand the ball today to righty Dan Giese, who will be making his first major league start thanks to the foot injury suffered by ace Chien- Ming Wang. Giese, a one-time used car salesman, has appeared in three games for the Yankees this season, posting a 1-1 mark to go along with a 1.23 ERA.
After spending six years toiling around the minors, Giese retired in 2005 and took a job selling cars in California. However, he returned to baseball, signing with the San Francisco Giants and went 0-2 with a 4.82 ERA for them last season in eight relief appearances.
These two clubs have met just once in the regular season prior to this, as the Reds took two of three at home back on June 3-5, 2003.
