Yankees send Mussina to hill vs. Rangers

Mon 30th, June 2008

(Sports Network) - Mike Mussina takes aim at win No. 11 this evening, when the New York Yankees start a three-game series with the Texas Rangers at Yankee Stadium.

Mussina, who is 10-5 with a 3.93 earned run average on the year, had his last start cut short on Thursday in Pittsburgh due to rain. He had thrown 46 pitches before the game was postponed.

The 39-year-old righty lost for the first time in five decisions in his previous start on June 20 to the Cincinnati Reds, as he allowed four runs and 10 hits in eight innings.

Mussina has faced the Rangers 35 times over the course of his career and is 17-12 against them with a 3.76 ERA. He is 6-0 with a 2.72 ERA in his last nine starts against them, though, and has not lost to them since 2003.

His 17 career wins versus Texas are tied with Boston's Bartolo Colon and San Francisco's Barry Zito for the most among active pitchers.

New York found itself on the losing end of a 3-1 decision to the cross-town rival Mets on Sunday at Shea Stadium.

Wilson Betemit's homer was the lone run for the Yankees, who had won the middle two contests of the four-game series. Darrell Rasner (4-6) took the loss despite yielding eight hits and two runs over five innings, fanning three and walking three.

Texas, meanwhile, took two of three over the weekend from the Philadelphia Phillies. In Sunday's rubber match, Eric Hurley got his first career victory in the Rangers' 5-1 win in Arlington.

Hurley (1-1) gave up just one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings while Chris Davis hit a solo home run for the Rangers, who have won five of their last eight games.

Hoping to keep Texas on the right track tonight will be rookie right-hander Scott Feldman, who is 1-3 with a 4.60 ERA. Feldman received a no-decision on Wednesday in Houston, as the Astros reached him for two runs and six hits in four innings of his team's 3-2 win.

Feldman, who will be making his first-ever start against the Yanks, is 0-3 with a 6.91 ERA in five starts on the road this year and 0-7 with a 6.72 ERA in his career away from home.

The Yankees won five of six from the Rangers last season and have won eight of their last nine overall in the series. However, all three of Texas' wins in the matchup over the last two seasons have come in the Bronx (3-4).
