Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Nick Swisher hit a grand slam and a solo home run as the Chicago White Sox held off the Cleveland Indians, 9-7, in the opener of a three-game set.
Jim Thome added a three-run home run while Orlando Cabrera went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the White Sox, who have won five straight. Gavin Floyd (9-4) gave up four runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and a season-high 10 strikeouts in six innings of action.
Chicago has been tough at home of late as the team has won seven straight and 16 of its last 18 overall at U.S. Cellular Field. On the season, the team has a 28-11 mark at home.
Jhonny Peralta went 5-for-5, a career-high, with a solo home run, three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored for the Indians, who have dropped three straight and six of eight overall. Jeremy Sowers (0-4) was banged up for eight runs on six hits and a pair of walks in just three innings of work.
The Indians jumped on top in the first inning as Ben Francisco worked a two- out walk and then scored when Peralta followed with a double to the right- center gap.
Chicago, though, responded in the bottom of the inning. The team got its first two runners on base to start the frame, but the next two recorded outs. However, Thome launched a shot over the left field wall for a 3-1 lead.
The White Sox extended their lead further in the third inning. Cabrera led off with a double and three batters later Jermaine Dye brought him home with a single. Thome followed with a double and Joe Crede then walked to load the bases for Swisher, who smacked a pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam and an 8-1 lead.
Cleveland got a run back in the fourth as Peralta led off the frame with a home run to make it an 8-2 game.
The Indians chipped away further at their deficit in the sixth on RBI singles from Shin-Soo Choo and David Dellucci to make it an 8-4 contest.
The White Sox, however, got one back in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out, solo home run from Swisher for a 9-4 advantage.
The Indians attempted a comeback in the ninth off Nick Masset, but fell short. With Kelly Shoppach on third and one out, Jamey Carroll hit a grounder to third that Crede threw away. After Francisco grounded out, Peralta lofted a double to left to score Carroll.
Matt Thornton then took the mound and Choo singled to center to plate Peralta, but he then got Casey Blake to line out, picking up his first save of the season.
