Tatis' 12th-inning blast lifts Mets over Phils

Sun 6th, July 2008

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Fernando Tatis' two-run home run in the top of the 12th proved to be the game-winner as the New York Mets topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-2, in the rain-soaked third installment of a four- game set at Citizens Bank Park.

The game was delayed by torrential rain in the bottom of the eighth inning for nearly three hours.

Carlos Beltran homered and knocked in the other two runs for the Mets, who picked up their third win in their last four games. Joe Smith (1-1) tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings to earn the win and pick up All-Star closer Billy Wagner, who blew his sixth save of the season.

Starter Oliver Perez shut out the Phils on four hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking two.

"He had good command, and kept his poise," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

Jayson Werth's two-run homer in the ninth provided the offense for the Phillies, who have lost two straight after a four-game win streak. Chad Durbin (2-2) allowed two runs in two innings of relief to take the loss in relief of Kyle Kendrick, who held the Mets to a run on eight hits in six frames.

On the day they were both named National League All-Stars, neither Chase Utley nor Brad Lidge distinguished themselves. Utley went 1-for-6, while Lidge allowed a run in an inning of relief.

With Durbin in his second inning of relief, the Mets pulled in front for good in the 12th. Carlos Delgado worked a leadoff walk, and though he was bunted to second, it didn't matter, as Tatis belted a homer just to the left of straightaway center to give New York a 4-2 advantage.

Jimmy Rollins led off the bottom half with a single and stole second, but Smith retired Ryan Howard, Geoff Jenkins and Pedro Feliz in order to lock up the win.

"I'm definitely concerned about our hitting," Manuel said. "I think we've got to catch up."

The extra frames were forced after the Phillies came back from the brink off defeat against Wagner.

Shane Victorino lined a single to center off Wagner to lead off the ninth, but Wagner retired the next to batters and had Werth down in the count 1-2 before he launched a hanging slider deep into the seats in left-center. Utley singled, but was forced out on Rollins' grounder as the game headed to extra innings.

The Phillies had runners on second and third with one out in the first, but weren't able to push a run across as Perez struck out Howard and got Pat Burrell to pop up as he escaped unscathed.

Beltran put the Mets in front with two outs in the third, ripping a 3-2 fastball just over the wall in right for a solo blast.

The rain started falling in the top of the eighth, and the Phillies pieced together a threat in the home half against Duaner Sanchez in a steady downpour. Utley reached on an error with one out, and after Rollins walked, Pedro Feliciano was brought on to face Howard. But, the rain became too much and the game was halted for 2:50.

After the lengthy wait, Feliciano struck out Howard. Aaron Heilman came on in relief and walked Burrell to load the bases, but Heilman induced Feliz into a rally-killing groundout to keep the 1-0 edge.

The Mets picked up an insurance run in the ninth as Jose Reyes led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on Endy Chavez's sacrifice bunt and scored on Beltran's single to right.

Game Notes

The reigning NL MVP has swiped 35 straight without being caught dating back to last season...The Phillies were just 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base...The Phils send Adam Eaton (3-6) to the mound against Pedro Martinez (2-2) to try and salvage a spilt in the series finale on Monday.
