(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees try and complete a sweep in their brief two-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees won their third straight game in the opener of this set on Tuesday, as Andy Pettitte threw eight brilliant innings and Melky Cabrera hit his first home run in the Bronx since May 4 in a 5-0 triumph.
Derek Jeter was 2-for-4 and had two RBI for the Yankees, who are 4-2 over their last six contests, while cutting their deficit to 7 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for the lead in the AL East. The Red Sox trail the Rays by three games, as Boston beat Minnesota, 6-5, on Tuesday.
Pettitte (10-6) allowed just four hits and fanned five batters, putting him at 1,501 strikeouts in a Yankee uniform.
B.J. Upton was 2-for-4 and had the only extra-base hit for Tampa Bay, which has dropped its last two after rattling off seven victories in a row.
Scott Kazmir (7-4) took the loss as he was touched for two runs on five hits in just five innings of work.
Heading to the hill for the Yankees today will be right-hander Sidney Ponson, who will try and bounce back from a horrific start in his last trip to the mound last Wednesday. Ponson was hit hard by his former team, the Texas Rangers, in that one, serving up seven runs and nine hits in five innings. However, he did not factor in the decision of his team's 18-7 win.
Ponson lost to the Rays earlier this season and is 8-9 lifetime against them with a 4.29 ERA in 25 games (24 starts).
Tampa will pin its hopes on righty Edwin Jackson, who is 5-6 with a 4.08 ERA this season. Jackson picked up a win on Friday against the Kansas City Royals, as he allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits in eight innings.
Jackson tossed seven scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Yanks back on May 13, but is 2-2 in 10 games (six starts) against them with a 4.42 ERA in those outings.
The Yankees have won six of their 11 meetings with the Rays this season after winning the season series by a combined 23-13 the last two years.
