Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Greg Dobbs' three-run homer capped a seven-run fifth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies survived a nine-run fourth inning from the Atlanta Braves to capture a 10-9 win in the second of a three- game set at Citizens Bank Park.
Chris Coste went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Ryan Howard drove in a pair of runs for the Phillies, who had dropped five of six coming into the game.
Cole Hamels was lit up for nine runs -- four earned -- on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work, his shortest outing of the season. Six Philadelphia relievers combined to throw 5 1/3 scoreless innings with Adam Eaton (4-8) getting the win for pitching a scoreless fifth.
Mark Teixeira went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and two runs scored while Omar Infante drove in a pair of runs for the Braves, who had won three of four coming in. Blaine Boyer (2-6) was tagged with the loss as he gave up three runs on three hits in the fifth inning.
Mike Hampton, making his first appearance since August 19, 2005, gave up six runs on eight hits with a pair of walks in four-plus innings of work for Atlanta, which became the first team since Kansas City to score nine runs in an inning and still lose the game.
The Royals accomplished the dubious feat on August 23, 2006 against the Cleveland Indians when they scored nine runs in the first inning, but eventually lost, 15-13, in 10 innings.
A nine-run fourth inning by the Braves put the Phillies in a 9-3 hole, but the team plated seven runners in the fifth to regain the lead.
Jimmy Rollins led off with a single, Shane Victorino reached base on an infield hit and Chase Utley followed with a single to load the bases and chase Hampton from the game.
Royce Ring took over on the mound and faced just one batter, Howard, who smoked a single to center that brought home Rollins and Victorino.
Boyer then took the hill and got Pat Burrell to fly out, scoring Utley, for the first out of the inning. Jayson Werth then singled, but Eric Bruntlett then flied out. Coste kept the inning alive with a single to center that scored Howard. Dobbs then came on to pinch-hit for Eaton and he crushed a 1-2 fastball into the upper decks of right field to give Philadelphia a 10-9 lead.
Ryan Madson walked the bases loaded in the Braves half of the sixth inning, but he got Infante to fly out and end the frame.
Chad Durbin then worked a scoreless seventh inning and J.C. Romero repeated the feat in the eighth inning.
Brad Lidge then worked a perfect ninth to pick up save No. 23 in 23 opportunities this season, which broke a team-record set in 2005 by Billy Wagner.
The Phillies grabbed the lead in the second. Howard led off with a walk and Burrell followed with a double to left. Coste later punched a single to center that scored Howard and Burrell for a 2-0 lead.
Philadelphia got another run on the board in the third as Victorino led off with a triple to the gap in right-center and then crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Utley.
The Braves exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a couple of miscues from the Phillies. The first three batters reached base for Atlanta to load the bases with no outs. Infante then punched a double to right that brought home Yunel Escobar and Teixeira. Jeff Francoeur then followed with a sac fly to chase home Brian McCann and tie the game.
Martin Prado then smoked a liner to second that Utley knocked down, but he bobbled the ball and the Braves had runners at first and third. Mark Kotsay then singled to right to bring home Infante. Hampton then hit a soft grounder back to the mound that Hamels fielded cleanly and went to second to start a double play, but he threw the ball into the outfield and Prado scored. Gregor Blanco then laid down a clean bunt single to bring home Kotsay. Teixeira later blasted a three-run shot into the left field stands for a 9-3 advantage.
