AL East-leading Rays take on KC again

Sun 27th, July 2008

(Sports Network) - With Boston and New York doing battle at Fenway, the Tampa Bay Rays will try to extend their lead in the AL East when they take on the lowly Kansas City Royals this afternoon in the finale of a four-game set at Kauffman Stadium.

Andy Sonnanstine will try to snap a personal two-game losing streak when he toes the rubber this afternoon. Sonnanstine tossed a strong game against Oakland this past Tuesday, surrendering just three runs on five hits, while also striking out five batters. However, the right-hander received little run support and found himself on the wrong end of an 8-1 setback.

Earlier this season the 25-year-old dominated the Royals, holding KC scoreless through seven innings, while scattering five hits.

In nine starts on the road, Sonnanstine has collected a solid 5-2 ledger, but his ERA is less than impressive as it currently sits at 4.47.

Kyle Davies will take the hill for Kansas City, and he is in desperate need of a victory. Davies has not tasted victory since June 17th when he led KC to a slim 2-1 win over St. Louis. Since then, the righty is 0-2 in six starts.

The last time the 24-year-old was on the hill, he suffered a 7-1 setback to Detroit. In the loss to the Tigers, Davies only threw four innings, allowing just two runs on five hits.

Home has not been so sweet for the young hurler, as Davies is currently 1-2 at Kauffman Stadium with a terrible 4.58 ERA.

Last night, Carl Crawford finished 2-for-4 with two triples and two runs batted in, as the Rays edged Kansas City, 5-3.

Scott Kazmir gave up two runs on seven hits, while striking out five, in five innings of work but did not factor into the decision. Al Reyes (2-2) tossed a scoreless seventh inning and took the win for the Rays, who have won three of four.

Carlos Pena went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk, while Eric Hinske added an RBI for Tampa Bay.

Kansas City starter Luke Hochevar matched Kazmir's effort, as he allowed two runs on four hits in five innings, and also got a no-decision. Horacio Ramirez (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits in 2 2/3 frames of relief, and took the loss.

Mark Grudzielanek finished with three doubles, while Ross Gload and Esteban German each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Royals, who have lost five of six.

Since the start of the 2006 season, the Rays have taken 13 of the 20 meetings between these teams.
