Brewers, Pirates start series in Steel City

(Sports Network) - Lefty Tom Gorzelanny makes his second start since a stint in the minors tonight, when the Pittsburgh Pirates open a three-game weekend series with their still-in-contention National League Central Division rival Milwaukee Brewers at PNC Park.

A 26-year-old former second-round draft pick, Gorzelanny was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis in early July after beginning the 2008 season with a 6-7 record and a 6.57 earned run average over 17 starts.

His last pre-demotion start and his first post-return outing were also against the Brewers, each resulting in losses as the Illinois native allowed 18 hits and 13 earned runs in 9 1/3 innings.

Gorzelanny's last win came June 24 against the New York Yankees, when he scattered six hits and allowed three runs in a 12-5 in Pittsburgh.

He won a career-high 14 games last season and posted a 3.88 ERA in 201 2/3 innings.

For the Brewers, right-hander Dave Bush - a Pittsburgh native - returns for his 10th career appearance against the Pirates.

He scattered four hits and allowed a run over eight innings against Pittsburgh on July 5 in Milwaukee, getting a no-decision in the Brewers' 2-1 win, before allowing seven hits and three runs in a 10-4 win on Aug. 22.

Lifetime against the Pirates, he's 2-4 with a 5.04 ERA in nine games - eight starts - and 50 innings.

Overall, Bush has gone four straight starts without a loss, allowing 20 hits and seven runs in 27 1/3 innings.

On Wednesday in St. Louis, Ryan Ludwick finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, as St. Louis used a four-run eighth inning to upend Milwaukee, 5-3, and earn a split in the two-game set.

David Riske (1-2) took the loss for the Brewers after giving up three runs in the eighth. Starter Manny Parra was solid in six-plus innings, as he gave up one run on six hits and struck out seven for Milwaukee, whose five-game win streak ended.

The Brewers also fell to six games back of the Chicago Cubs for first in the NL Central.

Mike Cameron and Jason Kendall each finished with two hits and an RBI, while J.J. Hardy had three hits and drove in a run for the Brewers.

In Pittsburgh, Jason Marquis threw seven scoreless innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hit shutout, as the Chicago Cubs completed a three- game sweep with a 2-0 victory.

Zach Duke (4-13) was the hard-luck loser and fell to 0-9 in 14 starts since his last victory on June 9 against Arizona. The lefty was charged with two runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in eight innings.

Raul Chavez had two hits for the Pirates, who have lost seven in a row and 11 of their last 13.

Milwaukee has won eight of its nine matchups with the Bucs this season, including two of the three meetings in the Steel City.
