Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Felix Hernandez tossed six solid innings, and Raul Ibanez homered and drove in all the Seattle runs, as the Mariners snapped Cleveland's 10-game winning streak with a 3-2 win over the Indians.
Hernandez (9-8) gave up just two runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out seven, and picked up the win in the opener of this three-game set. Roy Corcoran threw two scoreless innings of relief, and J.J. Putz tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 10th save.
Ibanez and Yuniesky Betancourt each finished 2-for-4 for Seattle, which has won five of seven.
Cleveland came into the game with its first 10-game win streak since April 2002, but tumbled to the loss after Jeremy Sowers (2-7) gave up three runs on seven hits in five innings, with no walks and no strikeouts.
Shin-Soo Choo finished 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and one RBI. Catcher Victor Martinez was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, and started at first base, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
The Mariners got one run in the first inning after a rain delay of almost an hour. Ichiro Suzuki led off with a single and went to second on a ground out, then stole third before Ibanez singled him home.
In the third, Betancourt singled in front of Ibanez, who blasted a two-run homer to left field for a 3-0 edge.
The Indians got one run back in the home half. After Andy Marte singled and Grady Sizemore doubled to put runners in scoring position, Jamey Carroll grounded out to first to plate one run.
A runner still remained on third, but David Dellucci struck out and Jhonny Peralta fouled out to end the frame.
In the bottom of the fourth, Martinez led off with a walk and scored on Choo's two-base hit. But Hernandez settled down and retired the side without further damage. The Mariners starter worked around a walk and hit batsman in the fifth, and pitched a scoreless sixth despite walking Choo.
Corcoran was perfect in the seventh before giving up three singles in the eighth. Dellucci hit the first to lead off, but Peralta grounded into a double play. Martinez and Choo each followed with a base hit, but Franklin Gutierrez flied out to end the threat. Putz struck out two of three batters faced in the ninth to finish the game.
Game Notes
Cleveland had become the first ballclub since the 2004 Tampa Bay Devil Rays to win 10 in a row and drop 10 consecutive games in the same year. The Indians lost 10 straight from June 28-July 9 this season...Martinez had been on the DL since June 12 after undergoing surgery on his right elbow. To make room on the roster, the club designated infielder Andy Gonzalez for assignment...Suzuki's stolen base was his 40th of the season. He now has three MLB seasons with at least 40 stolen bases.
